I'd rather people just got on with the game.
Waiting while 3 others mark their ball is distracting to me!

+1 for this. Some people's power of concentration must be verging on zero if balls on the green put them off. As I said before, it's amateur golf, not the Race to Dubai. My thoughts exactly.
I don't mind balls on the green at all and I only mark mine if it is anywhere near someone else's line and then I will usually ask if they want me to, as I would rather leave it where it is anyway.
It mildly irritates me when people mark their ball all the time. Especially if it is my turn to putt and I address the ball, then am forced to wait whilst a faffer (a breed of golfer that this forum attracts like a magnet it would seem) goes up to mark their ball which isn't bothering me in the slightest.
Incessant marking contributes to slow play in my view. Should be frowned upon.
Lastly, Bobmac - I have never heard that all balls should be lifted when someone putts as an aspect of etiquette. Can't have been a historically consistent thing as we never would have had stymies!
Sorry but that sounds rude to me. I expect to be able to see the hole and not another ball. Laziness or gamesmanship or your part I would say.Another thing that gets on my wick is a friend of mine who, as an opponent in a match, asks me to mark my ball when it's 3 feet past the hole on the opposite side to his. It's no penalty if he hits it & it would actually help him. Told him the rule but he still makes me bend down unnecessarily.

You can't ask me to finish it off in matchplay. Well, you can, but I don't have to.I would also ask you to mark the ball or finish it off if you are that close to the hole and directly behind the hole on my line - that's off putting for a lot of people
Once your putt has stopped either finish it off if that's the quickest method or mark it and stand aside to let the next person putt
Not at all, we often do this when playing friendly games. Most people see the unmarked ball as an advantage, possibly stopping their putt if they hit it too hard. It's accepted in the group in which I play. Saves a lot of farting about and unnecessary bending, important at our age.The fact that you do it does not make it the right thing to do!

If not this what? I just don't understand.Nothing to do with powers of concentration for me - I just prefer balls marked and lifted - as I was taught. I 100% always mark and pick up if it is not me to putt. And as it takes seconds to mark and pick I see no reason for players to just not do so and so avoid any risk of causing a player any discomfort or distraction.
And if asked I would happily lift it. It certainly wouldn't bother me.Goodness. What makes you think that your ball positioned 3ft the other side of the hole on same line as your FCs would not distract him. If anything your ball would be one that I would always asked to be marked and lifted.

Correct! He can allow you leave you ball there but he doesn't have to:thup:
Today I played in a 3 ball friendly match. On one hole I left a putt 2 feet short, just off one of my opponent's lines. I asked him if he wanted it marked, he said it didn't matter & proceeded to hole his putt. Sometimes, because it was so dry, we didn't bother marking balls at all. Nobody was bothered.
It didn't put me off. http://forums.golf-monthly.co.uk/sh...-I-ve-never-done-before&p=1583789#post1583789
