Books - what are you reading just now?

Just finished The Amateurs by John Niven.

Crap 18 handicapper gets knocked out by an errant drive, is in a coma, then wakes up to find he is miraculously a world class golfer but with a few unfortunate side issues.

Set in Ayrshire, it’s a cracking read if you are not easily offended.
 
The Body in the Dales, JR Ellis. First in a series of books set in Harrogate and the Yorkshire Dales. Excellent first book, hopefully the next keeps up this level.
 
Human Remains - Jo Callaghan, 3rd in a series. It follows a police officer / dept who use a hologram AI with their cases. It shows the potential and also problems with it. Interesting stuff

What The Dark Whispers, MJ Lee, the latest in the Ridpath series. Another solid outing, always a reliable read.
 
Secret of Secrets by Dan Brown the latest novel in his Robert Langdon series.

I won’t put any spoilers in but it’s definitely the weakest of all the Langdon novels. Worth a read if you like Dan Brown but it doesn’t flow half as well as his other books in the series and doesn’t feel like it fits in the Langdon series.

Reading this at the moment, I think it is as good as the rest of the series and always find them interesting. I like to read some and then google so of the items discussed in the book to see if they are real (most are) and get a bit of background information to build upon the storyline.

Not my usual style of book which is more along the Jack Reacher/Spider Shepherd/Mitch Rapp type of thing.

It’s just not done it for me this one. Feels to forced in trying to put it all together compared to the natural flow of how others in the series.

The others have all been exceptional in their own way, insightful, historically interesting and thought provoking. This one just feels like Langdon is stumbling his way along and not really using the intellect he’s known for and puzzle solving. But I’ve finished now and onto my next book.
 
I downloaded the Dan Brown book but not started it yet.
What I am curious about, does it follow the last book or the last movie?
The movie had a happy ending where they stopped the bad guy, in the book they didn’t and half the world should be sterile.

There’s no reference/link to the past books in name or description just a brief mention that Langdon has seen plenty in the past (I’m paraphrasing but you get the gist)
 
Just started a new book, going more mindset and and philosophy over the next few months as I take a break from novels and currently reading “The Daily Stoic” by Ryan Holiday, I’ve also got Marcus Aurelius book, and “How to be stoic” By massimo pigliucci lined up to read.

Stoicism and that part of philosophy fascinates me so I’m taking a deep dive to see about it all.

I'm about 8 in. Vigilante series. If you like that sort of thing it's decent enough. It follows a formula but don't they all. They are an easy read, popcorn stuff.

Not as deep as Bosch, not as good as earlier Reacher.

The author does insist on explaining the background in every book, then each key thing in each book in subsequent books. As though you'd pick up book 6 and need an explanation for everything that's happened before 🙄. I find that very annoying but I just brush over those pages.

Have you tried the Milton series? Similar type of thing. They are a level up, very good.

Just finished Puckoon, Spike Milligan’s first book. Very funny but I was pretty surprised by the casual racism throughout, it was a 2nd hand book printed in 1972. I wonder if later editions were edited?

Really enjoyed them. He really builds the characters over the books and there's a bit of nice gentle humour in them as well.
