Ever since I started playing golf I've had a very flat swing, which got me down to 5 handicap many years ago. Virtually every instructor I've had, and I've had a lot, have encouraged me to swing more steeply. I can remember the pro giving 12 year old me a lesson saying "get those hands high". I've tried this many times and, every time I do it, consistency goes out of the window and lots of shots go straight left or slice, something I rarely do with my "flat" swing. I have a peculiar build. I'm 6' 0" with very short legs and quite long arms. If you think about this you'll see that when someone like this stands over the ball they stand very upright. When they swing the shoulders around the spine the club swings on a much flatter plan than with someone who is more bent over the ball.
In my case this flatness is made worse by my head rising on the backswing and, again sometimes, on the downswing. After a recent post Bob looked at my swing and advised me to forget about the flatness and just concentrate on maintaining my posture. I've been doing that for the last couple of weeks and the results have been excellent - when I do it properly. On a good day I can hit all the fairways with the driver, but not when I'm trying to get steep. At the moment, even most of the misses are going straight and my wedge play has improved 100%
So thanks for the free lesson, Bob. I'm swinging more naturally now than for a long time. I've been told before "If it's not uncomfortable you're not doing it right" but that never really worked, it's hard to stop doing it the way you've been doing it for 50 plus years.
Just enough of the season left to get back to single figures. Target is to beat my age next year, you never know!
