Anybody on here or knows someone who has got a BMW X3D and if they have had any problems with the diesel engine carbing up the next door neighbour as a 05 320D estate and he has had a lot of fuel problems he thinks the cause of it was putting cheap Tesco diesel in it, thinking of changing my 07 reg 318ISE for one the only thing that’s wrong with the car is the boot, can’t get all my golf gear in the boot the powakaddy trolley has to go on the back seat.

i.i.r.c. there a 3 diesels. Almost no improvement (2 mpg) in the smallest (18d) compared to the 20d. Quite a lot of thirst going on with the tasty 30d though.

I run a 320d (plus know a few other owners) and have not had any probs with the engine/fuel at all.

It's the rest of the car that's not really very impressive!!!

The ride in the X3 is nasty. Just horrible. Same with most BMWs that use run flat tyres.

As for your neighbours problem, does he do a lot of short journeys? Probably just needs a good old fashioned "Italian Tune Up" to clear the crap out of the DPF.

i had the displeasure of going a long trip in an X3 2.0d. The interior feels cheap, the engine was noisy, the ride was hard and it offered absolutely no space benefits to a 3 series tourer. Have also been a long trip recently in a 318d tourer and was very impressed with the feel, ride, handling and general levels of quietness compared to the X3. if you want a chelsea tractor, check out the honda crv 2.2 diesel.

I'd avoid both though, and go for a new shape Accord Tourer with the new 2.2 i-Dtec diesel engine in it. beautiful car.

currently driving a Civic 2.2 sport diesel and the engine is great. just not the squeaky dash. accord is a different level of car though.

I only work on the railway I don't own it
Haha very good!
Get your bum onto autotrader, it would surprise you how cheap they can be bought these days.

The diesels only being slightly more frugal than the petrols. We have the 4.6 and got it fr a pretty good price last june. As long as it has a full service history they should be good to go, We invested in an extended warranty should anything go wrong.
This is the kind of thing Im talking about, 4.4 v8 is a pretty good engine.

The level of comfort in the X5 is fantastic, I usually drive but have been in the back seat occassionally and its as smooth, if not better than any other car my discerning arse has ever been in.

Probably around the 18-22mpg range, I do tend to like my right foot. (4.4 is a little better as it the 4.8 being a newer more efficient engine) the 3.0 petrol is shockingly poor in both terms of power and consumption as it just isnt powerful enough and i always needing pushed on, I test drove one and just didnt like it.
What I found though is that it comfortably sits at 25 maybe more on normal runs with the kids in the back, local driving is hard on fuel on virtually all cars as the car is usually running from cold.
The onboard computer is scarily accurate though when it comes to consumption and tells you in exact miles rather than some of the older cars I have driven using rounded off figures.

Forgot to mention, being pre 2006 it costs the same to tax as most family saloons (245 this year). Servicing is a little higher as it has 8 spark plugs instead of 4 (about 20 quid extra) and uses 8 litres of oil (family saloons take around 4.5 usually).
Parts can be sourced away from dealers if necessary, GSF and Eurocarparts being two good oem spec suppliers.
