Hello,
I am 15. I play golf weekly. I am currently only playing off around 25. I am improving alot and quickly. I played 9 holes yesterday and shot a 43. Only 7 over. I am usually 9-11 over :) I am currently using taylormade rac irons. They are good and i like them. I would like some new irons though. I really hate fat irons so was looking at blades or thin clubs eg Mizuno mp57 or titleist ap1. I am worried i may struggle to control them. Shall i wait until the end of summer and see what i am playing off then. I will have too wait a bit anyway but was wondering if i should start saving now. Will blades be ok for me?
Thanks in advance

Well if you are wanting to get AP1s do it because they are nowhere near blades. How long have you been playing?
I am 16, have played for 18 months and I'm playing with blades (well not true blades but only 1 or 2 models are true blades)
If your handicap is 25 I doubt that they would suit you

I have been playing 10 months. since beginning last summer. Well i wasnt lloking at pure blades but maybe something close if you know what i mean. I like the thin address. I thought the ap1 were close to blades.

Personally I think there will be plenty of time in your golfing career for blades. Find a swing that works regularly and get down to low teen/single figures and have another think.

If you want a decent compromise in the interim from an out and out blade check out the Taylormade TP's. Small blade like head but with a cavity back for extra forgiveness. The model is a couple of years old so you should get some good deals

Tough call as many tour pro's don't even play with blades any more.

I would be tempted to say go for a progressive set that has cavities in the long irons working down to bladed short irons/wedge.

The reason I say that is because even the long irons are becoming obsolete as hybrids are taking over. Who knows what will be the best in 10 years time, but it probably won't be a bladed 3-iron.

You'll have plenty of ups and downs along the way so I would give yourself the best possible chance to improve and build your confidence and steer well clear of blades until your handicap is much lower.

Couple of friends of mine (off 3 and 5) moved away from blades to cavity backs. They can both shape their shots fine and find them much easier to hit.

Blades may look lovely at address but you've got to have a good swing and be a good ball striker to make them work. There's loads of good irons out there so have a good look around and you'll find something you like.

Make it easy on yourself and stay away from them.

The Titleist AP1 is not a blade, not even close. It is a game improvement club suitable for middle handicappers. As such, it may work well.

However, I would advise the OP to stick with his TMs for a while longer until his game improves further, then get fitted for something decent and that is likely to be a better fit than choosing now.

If he really wants a change, the Mizuno MX300 is a game improvement club used by pros and 20 handicappers alike, with lots of fitting options, and has a nice look and not much offset.

A few years ago I used a set of RAC LT's to get to a 6 handicap, nothing wrong withthe clubs fella. By all means have a think about personalising your wedge choice though and practice your putting, these are the areas you will see the most improvement especially if you h
get an hour or two per week.

Good to see that your handicap secretary is on the ball... ;) ;) ;)

I would go for something like Mizuno MX300's if I were you. Forgiving enough for the mis-hits that will surely come, but good enough clubs to see you well down into single figures.

I have a set of Taylormade LT2 irons and there awesome! if you like the Taylormades why swap?

Took me ages to get a set of irons that suited me tried bout 5 sets! At college i was playing off around 8.5-10 and thought i could hit better with blades! WRONG! If ur Taylormade do the business stick with them!

I agree with the other posts below if ur irons are good then concentrate on wedges + Putter this is the business end on the handicapp lowering goal!

Alternativly save the money and have lessons that will improve your game 10000x more than puchasing some blades and may well be cheaper!!

go see your club pro. get a lesson. get better then buy new irons based on what your pro suggests.

it's funny how in every sport i've ever been involved in, people always want new shiny stuff, even though it doesn't make them any better at what they do.

Mountain biking, skiing, kayaking... people always want new stuff - it seems the marketeers are doing their jobs well!

It's the nature in us all... we're all magpies in disguise!

I've just recently started playing again after a 10 year break. I'm still using my old set which must be about 13 or 14 year old cavities and playing of 8.

The only thing i changed was my wedges. So as said before don't focus to much on a new set of irons, concentrate on your pitching and putting this is where you should shave most shots of your score.

Personally I'd asy stick with the cavity backs. Get proficient with those (15 h'cap or below) and then think about getting shiney new bats.
