Made a change to my set up this week to stand more upright at address with a strighter back. Took some bedding in but was hitting the ball well last night. Played a roll up this morning and started off ok but then lost my way with the new swing especially on the drives.

Went to the range this afternoon and checked into Shankville. Everything was low and right. I felt as though I was coming way inside on the way back and either coming OTT and presenting the hosel to the ball or was trying to come back inside and not squaring the club correctly.

I'm now in a pickle mentally. I don't know wheree my swing is, what I'm trying to do or where to go next. I'm hoping some sleep and a clear mind in the morning will get me back on track. My club pro and my usual coach are fully booked all week so getting a lesson isn't an option. I don't want to go back to my old address which had got way to much knee bend and was almost a squat position. I know the taller address angle is the way to go to give myself more room to turn and generate more power.

I hope this was just a blip probably caused by trying to think too much about the swing and maybe just one swing fault causing a domino effect. Tomorrow will be do or die before I hit a major period of matches and competitions

Maybe a practise round just using half swings to try to keep the body movement to a minimum ? :D

Trying to keep on top of a change when it just ain't happening is murder.

But I'm sure that if anyone can sort it, you will. You know your swing bits and bobs ( good and bad ) better than most around here.

Funny thing was I was hitting my irons OK in the round this morning and my short game was awesome. 26 putts and no three putts show how close I was hitting my approaches and getting up and down. Like I say I lost a bit of inpetus on thway round and think that was down to not trusting it enough to just stand there with a new Titleist and let go.

After the range session yesterday I thought it would just be a grooving session to build the trust up. Instead I seem to have gone way back to "chopper" standards. I hope it was just something simple like coming too far inside on the backswing or sliding the hips instead of turning. I'll get HID to video a few if it goes Pete Tong and the forum gurus may be able to help

Homer, from previous video clips you seemed to dip and lose height during your swing. If you are trying to stand tall and swing upright, you may well subconsiously still be dipping and this may be the cause of your 'far right tendancy'

Video yourself and compare with an old clip and see what is happening.

If you think sorting out sliding hips is simple, then you're a better man than me, is all I can say :p

Too far on the inside on the backswing. Yup, I can fix that. It's the transition into the downswing where I start to have serious problems :(

I'm not saying it's simple, but I'm finding that stance a little wider and thinking about getting my weight on the inside of my left foot on the downswing is showing promising results (so far).

Homer, are you still standing the same distance from the ball with your more upright address? Just wondering if you need to be a little closer with being further away (hands higher) to start with?

Well the good news is that I went to the range today. I hit about 10 sh**ks out of about 150 balls so a lot better than yesterday and towards the end was just getting into position and releasing no problem.

Decided to play this afternoon to try and test it out on the course and becaue it will be the last opportunity I have for hopefully only 10-14 days after my op tomorrow. It wasn't too bad but snap hooked one on three (lost ball) topped a drive on 4, hit an ok shot on 5 and 6. Topped again on 7, hit a weak cut on 8 and finally nailed a drive on 9 and then topped my second.

On the back nine, I spanked a drive just like I did at the range and then shanked a 53 degree wedge (lost ball). Hooked at 11, topped at 12 and hit an ok shot at 13. Hit a decent drive but without much power at 14 and hit a good second just short. Hit one off the heel at 15 and then cut a 5 wood. Topped at 16, hooked OB at 17 (lost ball) and hit another ok drive that didn't go too far before topping my next.

So bloody frustrated. I have been on the practice ground and did check my set up again and stood a bit taller but still with good knee flex and hit a few ok. I just can't seem to stand on the course and have any confidence whats is coming next.

I'm hoping if the surgery isn't too bad I might get the green light to hit a few shots by the start of next week so we'll see if a rest helps

I don't tend to suffer with sha*** off the irons, but I do seem to periodically run into trouble with the woods (not driver, thank goodness) when I hit the equivalent shot (30 degrees left, cutting daisies)....at least I reckon it's the same thing.

Anyone know?

Anyhow, I take extra care to double check my distance from the ball for a game or two until it fixes itself. Now, standing further away (just a few cm's) for a few games is probably not the wisest of fixes, but it works for me.

I had a terrible time with them last year - it lasted for months. I helped to sort them out by laying the club behind the ball and then building my stance around it - rather than keep moving the club. I found that I was more consistent at set up like this and it stopped me from getting too close to the ball. So far this year, so good. (Just going to touch some wood.)

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs, so please feel free to tell me if this is borrox. :)

You obviously topped a lot. The obvious reason would be coz your taller stance is getting you to lift off the shot causing the top. But I'm guessing you've checked that. :o

So I'm wondering...

Is the new stance affecting your weight transfer at all ?

Are you shifting your weight back onto the right foot on the backswing, but not getting back forward on the downswing ? It's just a thought coz that might well give you the thinned shots as well as the big hooks.

Like I say, it's probably rubbish. :o

You know homer, with the best will in the world I’m thinking there’s far too many thoughts going through your head. I would stop all this fannying around with you’re swing, just go out and enjoy yourself. You’ve obviously played a long while and you seem to be analyzing every aspect of your game.

The way I see it, if your making 26 putts in a round you should be shooting low seventies. If your not then you need to except that other aspects of your game are what they are. Next time, go to the course, have a couple of putts, a few swings to loosen up then go play golf and enjoy. Don’t scrutinize your game, don’t look at your score card, don’t think of your score and just play.

Why the hell couldn't you have played like that last Sunday?????

Tommo,

To be fair its because I'm looking to get as low as possible that I'm making the changes. I know I have a number of swing flaws that despite efforts to eradicate are too ingrained but can be lived with. What I need now is something more stable and solid to use which is why I've started work on my address. I don't expect overnight success but have got it pretty well sorted on the range but need to take it to the course

My diagnosis...........you are thinking about it too much. Clear your mind of all swing related thoughts and just hit it like you do week in week out.
I onnce hit about 20 shanks in a row on the range - thats the most consistent I have ever been! No matter what I did I kept shanking. I went away and did some putting, came back and the shank had gone.

You’re missing the point, if you’re hooking, topping, hitting out the heel, cutting and shanking, then it sounds a confidence thing (too many negative thoughts when standing over the ball) more than anything else.

Getting into position, releasing, checking your set up again, standing a bit taller, flexing your knees….god sake man, relax if you want to get better.

Homer, read your own stuff mate, you’re getting caught up in all this bumf. I'll bet any money this lay off will do you good.

Couple of weeks off spent on You Porn (or similar).
Tip up at the club 5 minutes before you are due off.
DO NOT GO DOWN THE PRACTICE GROUND, DO NOT GO IN A PRACTICE BUNKER, DO NOT GO ON THE PRACTICE PUTTING GREEN, DO NOT HAVE A COMFORT BREAK (GO HAVE A SLASH INSTEAD)....STEP UP ONTO THE FIRST TEE, BALL DOWN AND SMACK IT UP THE FECKING ARSE.
SIMPLES.
