How have these betting ads been allowed on the forum?
As a non betting man and totally against ads of this kind I find it really annoying that the forum has agreed to its inclusion.
I get that Golf Monthly needs an income to keep going bit please, not in this way.
Rant over.

If everyone banned advertising from companies someone had a moral objection to, there'd be no advertising.

That's not really the answer though is it?
My point is about betting ads only and my morals, because of the devastating effects it has on society.
As for blocking the ads, I've tried that but it just comes back with another site.
I have ad blocker on my lap top but not this smartphone.

Lots of things have bad effects. Shall we ban Alcohol advertising too? What about the betting thread for the masters. Should that be locked?

To answer your problem, you can download adblocker off the app store. (y)

The ads are tailored to you, there must be a reason you are getting them e.g. you frequent betting websites. I've never seen them, it's usually ads for golf shoes for me.

Betting is not illegal, it's a popular pastime for many people, and you are in no position to demand the ads are removed because it offends your personal sensibilities.

I think we should ban the advertising of golf clothing as it's having a devastating effect on my finances.

Funny you should mention, "Tailored to you". Tonight I have the Titleist golf balls ad. Oh, just to clarify, I never ever frequent betting websites!
Also, at no point have I demanded anything, just my dislike of receiving betting ads.

I'm unsure, prem players get paid loads, but so do the best at the top of almost all fields.

Smaller sports would struggle. Becoming a pro golfer for example would be very hard working your way up, paying for everything. Event entrance fee's would have to go up considerably also.

How good would that be?
Not very. I assume this forum would cease or become subscription based.
Anything you do online and are not paying for, someone else is.

Btw, We are not the customer of GM, we are the product they are selling ;-)

Gambling ads are not simply like any old advertising. Gambling wrecks the lives of some gamblers and their families. Those who think it only takes willpower to stop going too far don’t really understand the power of addiction and the things that trigger addictive behaviour and relapses. The stuff that the betting companies put out with their ads about only betting to what you can afford; or stopping when it’s no longer fun, is simply lip-service addressing a destructive mental illness.

I don't disagree, but where then do we draw the line? We've already stopped tobacco advertising, fair enough can't argue with that, but what about alcohol, fast food, moblie phones etc etc

Just need to be aware and accept that gambling ads trigger, in some, very destructive addictive behaviour, behaviour that also destroys families in a way that most advertising doesn’t. Banning gambling ads does not ban gambling.

There is much that could be said similarly about advertising of alcohol, especially when it is made to look cool, trendy and even sexy - though for the addict any sort of alcohol ad can trigger the behaviour.

This question of addiction is ,to my mind, about opportunity as much as anything.
Meaning, that anyone who gambles ,drinks to excess, is already aware of how to do these things. The advert does not "trigger" their doing of it in the sense of " oh, look, there's something I can do".
The avid gambler ( addict) has always known what the opportunities are if he was able and willing to do the necessary to find and use them.
It's a question of opportunity to do it. Now, in this day and age, you don't have to go out and find a bookies runner and bet surreptitiously. Nor even when it later became easier by going out to find and use a bookmakers premises., or going to the bingo hall, amusement arcade etc.
Now, technology allows you to press a few buttons on a phone without getting out of your chair.
And how do you know that your gambling is so easy to do now?
The advert on TV. It tells you how, etc.
When you have done it that way a few times, you don't need other adverts with glamorous girls or particular celebrities or whatever the new advert says, to "trigger" your habit. Now that you know what to do , your habit is "triggered " whenever you decide to do it.

So, adverts don't trigger you to place that bet. You do. Adverts merely show you a way to do it , or do it easier or more attractively.
Of course, the easier it is for the newbie to do something, then the more people will try it and do it who otherwise wouldn't. More people gambling means more who gamble too much.
So in that sense ,no advertising will cut "addiction

I am using AdBlocker to avoid betting ads. I hate when I watch a video on a movie online, and then it interrupts for one minute because there is an ad for another betting website. I already have a website where I make bets, so logically I don't need another one. Betting is my second source of income, so I can say that I am practicing it professionally. I am even using the betting odds calculator to be sure that it is worth it. It is a handy tool for people that are often making bets. You need to introduce the amount of money you want to bet and what you will get if you win.
