Best UK Municipal Golf Courses

Don't bust a gut to play Carricknowe, very poor.
May be different now, but...
There were times when you had to run to claim your ball before it got pocketed by 'the locals'. And the 17th green tended to be used for all sorts of other activities.

Definitely 2nd tier - compared to Braids. Better than Craigentinnie though. Never played Carricknowe.

That's a pity, haven't played there for years but was always a friendly place, was it the pro or someone else in the pro shop? Or do they have a proper starter now?

It was whoever was in the shop at the time. Maybe they didn't like the look of big Del's mars bar (not the one you eat) and his tattoos. Trophies of a misspent youth. He can look rather menacing.

Braid hills is good, as has been stated... Too many whins for my liking though! :)

Silverknowes is also decent, if somewhat uninspiring.

I used to live in East Kilbride and played all my golf at Langlands or Torrance House. The latter being by far the better track and much better than I expected a muni to be.
I agree , I forgot about Torrance house gc.

One that is owned and managed by a local council ....
Great for golfers who cannot afford private club subscriptions.

I think I would take issue with the latter point above.

My council course club has players who are also members of very good private clubs (my private club has hosted many prestigious competitions, including the British Amateur ) and has some of the best golfers with little evidence of lack of income.

When you stand on the first tee in the company of a plus three handicapper you do not feel that this is where poor golfers play - that is poor, in ability or income unless the medical profession etc. is deemed underpaid in this day and age.

Well said, I play at a council course and drive a taxi for a living (on the side off course) but it makes my money up and does not effect my bennifits so to say its only poor people who play on these course is just all wrong.

Picking your words a bit 19th, I would think most posters got my meaning.
Believe it or not there are people in this country who cannot afford or do not wish to join private golf clubs.
I did not say anything about ability to play but a couple of my local municipal courses have produced many Scottish Internationalists and a few champions.

Noted that someone mentioned Thorpe Park and Orton Meadows in Peterborough, Iwas a member at Orton Meadows when I first started playing golf, smashing course - first half is long and has lakes, back nine is birdie opportunity land - won my first competition there thanks to lessons from the only pro who ever improved me - just googled him to see if he was still teaching - found out he committed suicide nine years ago - RIP Neil.
