A few days ago i posted about Astbury Hall nr Birdgnorth shropshire asking if anyone had played it and was it worth £55.
Well i played it today and the simple answer is yes - What a fantastic course. Its run by the same people that run The Grove, Troon and Turnberry etc etc and I reckon in 2 or 3 years time when the front 9 has had chance to mature it will be THE best track in shropshire. £55 is a preview rate and it may go up next year as it wants to compete with the Brabazons etc of this world and i reckon it could easily do that once its finished. The course is all done and manacured to top specs but they are still finishing off the club house bar etc and it won't be properly open until April next year but my advice would be play it while you can. Its brilliant. I would seriosuly consider organising a GM Forum meet there next year. :D

I just replied to your other post.

Glad to hear it was good.

I can quite believe it will become the top course, there's not a lot of competition. Quite where they pitch the final fee will be interesting......the location must surely work against it.

There's not much competition in Shropshire as I don't believe that there are any great golf courses in the county. There are a few decent ones i.e. Shifnal and Llanymench (where Woosie learnt his trade) but generally it's a poor county for golf.

However you don't have to travel too far to find some great courses. Within 30 miles of where I live we have Beau Desert, Whittington Heath, Sandwell Park and Little Aston.

I will try this new course as I've heard some good reports about it.

Harsh but true. It's a pity the "Windmill" course (as it was) at Hawkstone never came on well. The Old course (at Hawkstone) is not bad at all, but hardly great.

I live just outside Shropshire and think Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury were good courses. The top course at Hill Valley nr Whitchurch was good too. South Staffordshire (NW Wolverhampton) is the best in the area that I know of along with Beau Desert.

I played Perton the other week and I have to say it was in fantastic condition. I've not been a fan of it over the years but they've invested a lot and it shows. Also the Wergs is another top condition course currenty.

There's a list of some good courses, hope this changes your minds.

The only trouble with your argument is that Beau Desert and South Staffs are not in Shropshire. Neither is Brocton Hall.

Bridgnorth is quite good. Shrewsbury (Condover) is OK; good greens but dull, dull, dull. Wrekin is intersting. Hawkstone is good...there's lots of courses, just no great courses.
If I had to chose one place to play forever, it'd be Enville, and somewhat surprisingly, that's in the W. Midlands.
Even Llanymynech is 90% in Wales!!!

That was a small technicality but a fair one!

I agree with you, there's not any great courses in Shropshire but there are plenty of good ones. Seems if you extend the boundary out of Shropshire by 10 miles you reel in a few really really good courses! Must be something wrong with Shropshire! :D

I've never played Enville (nr stourbridge I think) which is another I've heard which is good.

The Wrekin is up there as one of the top in Shropshire IMO. Didn't play it this summer but the summer before it was in excellent condition and a good test.

I remember Enville with great fondness. I haven't been for a while and word is that it's been iffy at times with conditions.
Personally, I find that hard to believe. It is the closest thing to proper Surrey-type heathland/parkland this side of Watford.

I have often thought about organising a forum day there.

Watch this space next Spring.....

(if you remember :))

Wrekin is quite fun. Some bonkers holes there.

Folks

I have played brocton for the last 3 years in their open (Fantastic Course). My best mate at work is a memeber at the Wrekin and as I work in Telford have played all the courses lots of times. I have played Beau Desert in the GM forum meet and I have played a lot of the other courses that get a mention a part from Oswestry. South Staffs is about 2 miles form where I live and Wergs is even lcoser and i can honestly say the only one that comes close to Astbury Hall is Beau desert. (Never played Enville but thats on my list for next year)
