Not by me, I hasten to add, but by a guy I played with today who was off +1.

It was unbelievable.

One under gross at the turn then

Par
Birdie
Eagle (par 4)
Birdie (just missed another eagle, par 4 again)
Birdie
Birdie (had a fifteen footer for an eagle)
Par
Birdie
Par

It was only off the yellows, but f*** me, it was just incredible.

I've never played with anyone with a + handicap before, so I'd never heard anyone say "There for 2" after hitting their (first and only) tee shot to the middle of the green on a par 3.

Followed by "That's a 3 net 4" after a regulation two putt!

It's a different game. Inspiring and faintly depresssing, at the same time.

Fantastic shooting, some day u could shoot like that!

It's strange that nobody else replys to these kinds of posts. Their quick enough replying to Homers post or Kids or smithy's. Very strange, or maybe sad.......

Good heavens -7 on the back for a -8 gross , thats pro scoring standards. Must have been something to watch though

I've seen Tour Pro's play but only playing courses designed for their standard. I've never seen anyone of that standard play a "normal" course and been able to really compare myself to them.

It was a privilege to watch, really. The length and accuracy off the tee was just frightening. Effortless and fifty, sixty yards past my Sunday best.

He just took the course apart.

I played with a +2 when he had a 64 (-8) at Silloth on Solway. Not a huge hitter, but hit solid drives on every hole, found the greens and every putt either went in or came to rest beside the hole. He didn't look like a bogey all day and although he missed a couple of greens, it was always on the pro side. Consistency and course management.

No tips or advice, I'm afraid. He was just effortless. Just banged it down the middle and then just stepped up and hit it close.

But I ended up playing well because I was incredibly focussed on my game as I was petrified of playing like a knob.

That was the real lesson for me. I need to really focus and concentrate properly on every single shot. Definitely an area that I need to improve.

A lot of single figure handicappers have the ability to shoot under par, it might sound ignorant/arrogant whatever, but you have to believe that you can actually string a few birdies and pars together. Some touring pros turned professional at 3 and 4 handicaps so when an + handicap amateur shoots those sort of scores it sounds fantastic but Id say they secretly know they are capable.
Played with a mid to high handicapper today and on a par 3 said, 'chip and two putts, hopefully a 4' I told him to count the shots he has already hit, chipped up and rolled it in for a three, now I am no Bagger Vance, but surely counting all them shots before you have even hit your approach is just resigning yourself to mediocrity?

Definitely. Every time I've come down a couple, it's taken a while before I believed I deserved that handicap.

I think that's pretty rare these days, although I know Ian Poulter did it off 4. He holds the course record but the course is a whole lot tougher off the whites. He definitely knew he could do it. He was three behind with 7 to go in the scratch cup and went eagle, par, birdie, birdie to win as his opponent just crumbled in the face of that scoring.

Hey, we've all been there before! :)

For someone off + figures playing off the yellows should see them looking at 10 or more realistic birdie opportunities, if they hit every green in regulation then that's 18 putts worth sinking. SSS off the yellows is quite often 3 less than off the whites which can be quite depressing knowing you're supposed to make 3 birdies before you've really gotten anywhere.

I played with a guy once who was 8 under thru 9 holes and another who was 5 under on the back 9, disturbing how easily they seemed to find the middle of the clubface! :D

No denying it, that is one heck of a back 9 you posted above! I reckon you'll remember witnessing that round for a good few years, maybe forever!

Forever, I reckon.

As depressing as it was to know that I could never achieve that standard, he was similarly dispirited talking about the gap in ability when playing with Ross Fisher when he was an amateur.

I agree mate ,playing with these guys is a education in itself, played with one of my mates today who plays of 5 in a Bogey comp he was -4 for 10 holes and never missed a thing ,he faded slightly in the end and finished level par but he was hacked right of, i'd have been delighted but he knew what could have been.

Played with a +1 (hacker :-P ) at the Heritage open week - he had a shakey start with pars and bogey or two. eventually he had a few birdies and an eagle, with plenty of chances missed. He ended up +1.

But I learnt the biggest lesson, he drove the ball 270 every hole (when he took driver - and praised me for taking 3I from a few tee's) he then hit more than half of the greens. When he missed his wedges where to 3' at most. But mostly his shakey start was due to a few bad putts - when he got the speed of the greens (and teh very subtle breaks) he was a putting machine.

and my days heiglight was hitting a drive just short of him then going at a pin with a 8I that he thought was too risky - never made the putt be he was impressed by my sheer stupidity.

HRC - who was it you played with ?

I agree about finding it inspiration, I've played a few times this year with a +1 H/c'er at Brough, and it certainly focuses my game, so I prefer it anyday to to my 'social' playing buddies etc.

Witnessed him shooting a 63 Gross a month or 2 back, which as you say, was just effortless, - fantastic to watch and just shows you the attention to detail that most of us dont take over putts etc.
