Best MATCHPLAY tactics?

Once I had my partner whinge at me for not giving a putt to our opponent, who then missed it, and apparently I was in the wrong???

To be fair...
it was getting dark.
And the other 3 groups were on their desserts.

I will never forget my first ever match for my first ever club. I was the newbie and we were one short so I was sent out on my own like a lamb to the slaughter. My opponents were last lady Captain and one before that (how long do those jumpers last??) and they were nice enough when they saw how terrified I looked. Played ok and was still in the match and then on the 10th was suddenly asked to putt what had been gimme range previously. I missed and as we walked off previous lady captain twice or third removed told me how she had deliberately not made me putt out for 9 holes so she could then make me start doing so on the 10th when I was ill prepared to do so.

Not sure she should have told me her tactics but have never forgotten it nor used it as it just somehow seemed bad form.

There's nothing to stop you hitting the putt anyway after it's been given, if you've not had to hit any 2-3' putts.

If its a scratch knockout or a league match you get nowt, and expect nowt back.

If its a fun game aka old farts v whippersnappers the score doesn't really matter. Its all about the craic/banter.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is the pace of play.
Best case scenario is if I'm playing a tie and on the first tee my opponent says he's working/picking his kids up/taking his wife shopping, but 3 hours is plenty of time for a 2 ball, right?

Not if you're playing me matey.

I'm not saying play slowly, but certainly don't hurry to suit your opponent.

Cant really say here...I was 3 down, 3 to play (wasnt sure if I would spell Dormi properly!)...still feeling like I could pull it back. Up the 16th stroke 4 and hit a sweet drive down the middle. 160 yards in. Put my iron within 8 feet...this could be it..17th here we come. Then he sunk his 145 yard iron in for an eagle...........tactics, tactics

You are thinking negatively if you even have to think of putting your opponent off. You can look a right burke if he is aware of what you are up to.

The best ones are the quiet ones that I only use in bounce games.

1] I used to have one of those putters but I found I pushed all my putts to the right.
2] I think I may have left my car unlocked.
3] I can't understand why that shot is short, You had the right club and hit it well.
4] The locals say all the putts drop towards the sea/ river/town/hills.

Just let them know you hope to be in before it gets dark...For morning Tee Times..and ask them if they can return tomorrow when playing PM Tee Times mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
