Best Ever Holiday?

We flew into Calgary and picked up a hire car, did Jasper, Banff, etc etc down to Vancouver, then up to Whistler, and back to Vancouver . The scenery was stunning and people so so friendly. A couple of years later we did the east side Montreal, to Ottawa, Thousand Islands, Niagara Falls. Not as scenic as the west side but still some wonderful places and memories. Sadly our Alaska cruise and Rocky Mountaineer was cancelled due to Covid, but we are doing Australia and New Zealand on a cruise in the future.

Try and rebook it, it is fantastic, and Vancouver Island is beautiful; took the seaplane both ways in the co-pilot’s seat (the legroom seat ?)

If you do, try and do the train from west to east; the scenery gets more and more dramatic going that way ?
Thanks but out of the question for us nowadays.
My wife's insurance would be eye watering and she would not consider a long holiday.
A week away in the UK is the best we can do now.

One that stands out was our trip to Sorrento and Capri. The Amalfi Coast is absolutely stunning and Capri is beautiful. Spent our time eating some of the best food I’ve ever eaten, drinking lots of Limencello and exploring the many sights on offer: Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Blue Grotto etc. The wife loved the shopping in Capri and I enjoyed trying out as many of the trattorias I could.

This holds wonderful memories for me.
My late wife used to work for a travel company and we had a free trip to Italy. We stayed in a small town called Massalubrenza which is not far from Sorrento. We visited all the places you mention, especially when we stopped in this wonderful cliff top restaurant overlooking the Amalfi coastline.
Memories that will stay with me forever for obvious reasons.

Massa Lubrense? Beautiful if so! The only thing I didn’t enjoy on that holiday was the driving. Not so bad along the coast, but it felt like you were taking your life in your hands in the towns/city centres.

Yes, Massa Lubrensa, well it was a long time ago in the eighties!
The Italians are known for their (mad) driving habits.
Love Italy ?

Organised wine tasting tour of Burgundy in 1999. It was run by a couple who researched the growers and had got to know them over a number of years of organising tours. As a result we got a great reception and tastings from each of the growers and some great lunches at the vineyards.

First visited in the early 80’s, and went back every few years through to about 2015. Our ’go to’ place now is Taormina, Sicily. We stay at the Hotel Villa Angela, a short walk above the town - owned by Jim Kerr of Simple Minds… bit surreal seeing him pad around in his dressing gown, lovely chatty guy.

Taormina is, for me, Sorrento from 35 years ago. Not too touristy, and locals still have time to chat. Just down the coast, below Catania, is Syracuse and well worth the drive.

Zambia, flew to Lusaka and met by Brother in law
An hour to his place then throw some bits in a small bag and five hour drive into the bush.
Five days of fishing and then back to his , then it was a long drive down to Victoria falls, we jumped on an inflatable raft and white water rafted down the Zambezi from the base of the falls. Best fun you could have with your clothes on .

Mine would be a 3 week rugby tour to Japan, Hong Kong and Australia during my final year of school.

A trip with 38 of my mates across the world, seeing/doing so much and playing a sport I love was an experience I'll never get to repeat.

More recently it would like be the trip to Sri Lanka with the missus in the weeks leading up to lockdown. We hired a tuk tuk for 3 weeks and I drove it all over the stunning country.

Respect!!..... I've driven all over the world but Sri Lanka is the only place I'd just hire a driver & even then spend a lot of time peeping through the fingers as one moment that will never leave me...... as we pulled out to pass a Big Bus whilst another Big Bus was heading straight for us & then to just spot that a Tut Tut is on the outside passing both of us.... both Big Buses slowed, just enough, for everyone to squeeze through & survive somehow. Yes, Respect in deed!!

Did similar in reverse; into Calgary, saw the stampede, onto Banff, didn't stay in the Banff Springs Hotel but did play the course (y) and then all aboard the Rocky Mountaineer to Vancouver. Great country & lovely people.

I'm going on a very similar trip in just under 3 weeks, including the Rocky Mountaineer. Really looking forward to it.

My best holiday to date was a few years ago to Australia. Flew into Perth, then Darwin, Alice Springs, Cairns, Sydney (Australia Day was brilliant), Adelaide and finally the Great Ocean Road to the wonderful city of Melbourne. Great memories.

I go to Thailand (Hua Hin) every year with a group to play golf, two weeks, 8 golf courses and great weather, 75 degrees min and 85-95 maximum, fantastic food and the price is affordable, always come home with more golf shirts, drives the wife crazy.

We play 2 days have a day off, all golf is in carts with a lady caddy, drinks station every third hole, a real blast and I'm flying there this Saturday. yippee.

Yeah it was pretty mental at times, we picked it up in Colombo and had planned on driving it all the way to Dambulla in a day so we were thrown in at the deep end.

After a while it became a case of "if you can't beat them, join them" and you realise the only way you're getting out of a junction or through traffic is to just pull out and let them go around you.

We are planning to do things in the other order. We ‘did‘ Australia and NZ few years back, though not cruising…and hoping next year to do Seattle, BC, Whistler etc and cruise the Inside Passage Juneau to Vancouver.
