Best Course / Worse Course

not sure I have a best course as they are several that I have played (thanks to this forum) that I would never tire of playing.

Kent and Surrey is down there as probably the worst mainly because it seems to be neglected but with some TLC it could be a decent track as some of the holes are great.

I think flow of a course is very important.

Another I would put on my bad list is Dougalston in Milngavie, north of Glasgow.

Absolutely loads of trees, which make the course extremely tight and in many cases it's a lost ball if you hit into them due to the leaves. Ok, so that's just the type of course it is... albeit likely the trees were much less of a factor when the designer layed out the course originally.

But that layout is pretty bad with massive walks from green to the next tee, and a few holes on the back 9 where you exit the woodland path and still have a 50m walk up the side of the fairway to the tee.

Not a pleasure to play at all. Many of the holes are enjoyable and the condition is great, but not one I would wish to play every week.

It has always been bad for losing balls, seemingly Brian Barnes lost 5 on the day he opened it.
Many years ago we were supposed to play 36 holes but tried to walk in after playing 27 and got lost :(. If I remember correctly you can't even see the course from the clubhouse.

I'll be a real grump on this - but I think that it is unfair and disrespectful to be identifying a course as the 'worse' course you've played.

We have no idea of the effort and care put into a club and course by members and employees of 'lesser' courses to make their place the best it can be - and holding it up as 'terrible' would be very demoralising and could be financially very damaging to a club and so could be deemed libelous.

Really???

Its an opinion, are we only allowed to say good things these days and not bad things.

No one has slated a course on here saying its so badly run down it should be a potato field.

Quite comical given the way you've criticised certain MP's, Boris Johnson and Theresa May, Nigel Farage and 14m Brexiteers 👍

It is not libel if the comments are reasonable, not false. You are allowed an opinion, a view, as long as it is fair and can be backed up. No one has said anything out of the ordinary so far.

Look at reviews for courses on Trip Advisor or booking sites, they are full of comments about courses that allow us to make judgements on whether to play them or not. Plenty of those are not positive.

Disrespectful is charging someone to play a round then serving them up a poor product. It works both ways.

Can understand if they're not anyone's best but how can they be the worst? There's nothing wrong with them.

This is the whole point of the thread? Some ones worst is not necessarily because of any under lying badness, they are just near the bottom of my list. I have played a lot of golf courses, most of which were better.

I do however have a soft spot for Ruislip. I learnt to play golf there, with my now deceased Dad. Yep, it is not the best golf course, but that is not what I am judging it on.

I could judge Ritchings Park on the noise from the M4 and Heathrow, but then I would also have to mark down Centurion, Mill Hill, and Walton Heath.

I could judge Grimms Dyke on it being an unimaginitive layout, built in a swamp. I would then have to similarly mark down Hillingdon, but I was a member there for 13 years, and I had a lot of good times there.

Worst course is not a good name for the category really. Least favourite might be a better description.

I am not a fan of the Belfry either.

I would find it hard to define a worst course. It would not be based on the course itself but rather on what is being charged and what it is being promoted as. There is a little 9 hole course in a farmers field in my village. In technical terms, a truly awful golf course but it is very cheap, not meant to be a premium golf experience and is there so as anyone can just hit a few balls with their mates. On that basis, it is by no means a worst course as it does exactly what it set out to do.
Equally, you can have a premium course that did not live up to its price or billing. In golfing terms a far better experience than that local 9 hole course but a disappointment because it did not live up to the expectations it set.

what do you find good about it?

It had some interesting holes, some quirky holes, some great views, a very accommodating pro, who fitted me into the middle of their monthly medal, it was in good condition. I was on holiday, what's not to like? Ok, I had no preconceptions. It was fun.

More towards SLH, though i suspect he won't reply, as he rarely does to my comments;)

I just thought it was wet and poor condition and the holes were just not my cup of tee. as for the views, nothing spectacular IMO, nothing you can't get from any course around me. But i don't pay to look at the scenery, you can get that for free

Not in Watford you can't!

Iford
Queen’s Park - condition wise
Bulbury woods

Romsey

Well maybe it should have been most enjoyable course / least enjoyable course.

And I did think people would put a bit of rationale on why they didn't rate a particular course.

There's no such thing as a "bad" golf course.

Sure, you may get the odd goat track that's scruffy with poor greens, but that doesn't make it an all round bad golf course. It makes it a poor course on that particular day. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
