Of the few 'elite' courses I have played then Sunningdale Old was my favourite. 'Normal' member club would be Blackmoor. Best pay n play is Pine Ridge.

Worst, well I've played a few bad ones! My work society isn't known for good golfers! Chipstead, Richings Park, Clandon being a few I'd ideally never revisit. The only one I'd 100% turn down in favour of shopping with the Mrs would be Addington Court though. Just really, really awful.

I hope so. Harefield was a half decent course once. I used to queue up there at 6 in the morning to put s ball in the chute.
I played there once, only after it was already a 12 hole though. We got lost at one point. Can't remember what happened but we suddenly realised we were playing the 11th which we thought was the 7th and we'd missed four holes out, so we had to go back and find them.

So, ket me get this right, it's perfectly ok to slag off politicians but not golf club staff?

Chrisd nails it - in gaming circles, that is a sniper kill shot! SILH is just one of those unfortunate message board trolls - happy to slag anyone off but the minute something might come back on them, like word getting back to his own club about his comments, then he runs away and hides.

Best - St Georges Hill - Love the place. Such a great all round trip.

Worst - Could name some obvious pay and plays in the London area, which are under invested and have a huge footfall, but they are what they are (which in most cases is a good start for anyone picking up a set of golf clubs for the first/early time) so will go for a more 'established' club in London Beeches - Some of the worst designed golf holes. The 1st is a complete joke of a hole. Then when you play at as the 10th the joke is not even funny!

Based on friendliness:

The worst has to be Robin Hood GC, Solihull. My opponent (a member there) in the works competition escorted me from my car to the 1st hole, played the round and then escorted me straight back to my car. Other golfers I've spoken to have had a similar type of experience. One guy in particular joined and found the other members wouldn't speak to him. Shamefully, it's also the nearest course to where I live.

The best: Knighton, Powys. Here they make a point of welcoming visiting players.

Best - (Still) Quinta do Lago South - when my lottery money comes in this is where you'll find me.

Worst - Thamesmead - I could happily say that in block capitals as it's been closed for a couple of years now and nobody in their right mind is ever going to try to re-establish it the only redeeming feature was that it was only 9 holes so it didn't take that long to get round it. Made even worse that I played it when visiting my old man in London he says "Bring your clubs we'll go for a game of golf" so I hauled my clubs on 2 trains and various tube trains only to be taken there.

I used to live a 5 minute walk from the course in Thamesmead and luckily never played it. there can't be many driving ranges that make a target out of an abandoned burnt out car!

Hounslow Heath for many months had a burnt out car on the 4th fairway. One day it apparently had moved about 30 yards and one guy was complaining as he had always hit an 8-iron from the green from level with it and moving it had affected how he played the hole.

That course really was a joke. Anyone else ever heard of a local rule where you had to play left of a marker post to avoid a traveller encampment on the right hand side of the hole? Not that you were ever in danger of having your ball or clubs nicked when you played that hole..... ;-)

Best: Royal Dornoch. There's nothing not to like about the place.

Least favourite: A toss up between Strathpeffer and Murrayshall Lynedoch. I paid to play golf; not to go mountaineering.

Ps: Nairn Dunbar gets a special mention for the section by the sewerage works. (Nice course otherwise though).

Yeah mate, that joke is still hilarious after the 17th time.

It’s not nearly as funny as your absolute reluctance to part with money.

I get the impression you’re the kind of guy who goes to Tesco late evening and follows the person with the discounting gun because the thought of paying the full £2.99 for a small margarita pizza brings you out in a rash.

Like this thread and by looks of it sunningdale is the course to play, alas not on my budget though :(

anyhow my choices :

best - old course loved the experience and enjoyed the course. I would also like to say my best ever course is Tranquilo in Orlando! The course is amazing with every hole interesting, quality service from the staff and even fruit and drinks on each tee box. if you ever get chance to go to Florida you have to give it a go ( they even have pro v1’s as range balls)

the worst course unfortunately is Brancepth Castle in Durham, played in an open a year or so ago and our group of 20 were made not very welcome, the pro was rude is if he CBA and we did not even get greeted on the tee (just left to our own devices etc) The course was also long and tough and even your good shots are not rewarded!

when we finished the round we again received the poor hospitality and could not wait to leave !

Best? Not sure, Swinley, Sunningdale, Birkdale RCD? All great. Overseas Sawgrass and Sun City take some beating.... churlish to choose.

Worst? First thing that comes to mind is Carswell between Swindon and Oxford. Havent been in a vey long time and it was quite new, so hope it has matured.

My overriding memory is "farmers field with 18 flags in it."

Do message if ever down Oxford/Swindon way again, happy to host off the whites and will be amazed if have the same view by the 19th. Yes it has.

Best: Royal Dornoch. There's nothing not to like about the place.

Other than the extortionate green fees (£255 for a day ticket), the remoteness of its location, the wind blowing off the North Sea, even some of the holes are not that great (one is long and straight with gorse bushes on either side).

Least favourite: A toss up between Strathpeffer and Murrayshall Lynedoch. I paid to play golf; not to go mountaineering.
I like a spot of mountaineering, and as I remember on Strathpeffer it's only a couple that are steep.

Ps: Nairn Dunbar gets a special mention for the section by the sewerage works. (Nice course otherwise though).

Seem to remember the caravan park, too.
