Best course ever played?

I've only played abroad once in Canada and it was nothing special so can't compete with some of you lot,but we are blessed with some of the finest courses in the uk,maybe we don't have the service that the Americans do but we have the courses which is more important,so on that I'm picking 2.
For sheer indulgance and being treated very very well I'll say the 2010 course at Celtic Manor
For sheer joy of playing probably Cruden Bay (although I could have picked Edzell/Boat of Garten/Cullen in the mix!)

In no particular order... no outright favourite....

East Sussex National (East Course)
Dale Hill (Woosnam course)
Worthing (Lower Course)
Karsten Lakes (At Ping HQ)
Bearwood Lakes
East Sussex National (West Course)

No Walton Heath in that mix James?

Another that simply can't choose one - sorry Dodger :D

Best on foreign soil - Lilla Vik - Sweden
Most picturesque - Boat of Garten (on GM trip to Castle Stuart)
Best for the sense of history - Prestwick
Favourite Links - Dundonald
Favourite inland course - Beau Desert (GM Forum meet)

This thread is killing me! Makes me want to book trips everywhere!

Celtic Manor 2010 is the best course I have played in this country and then I would say Pearl Valley South Africa for the best course abroad

Interesting thing is to see how people rate courses differently. I guess for the better players amongst you, you often rate the course only on the course and the challenge it presents, and fair enough. For some others, me included, its about the experience, the way they treat you, the lunch/drinks, practise facilities.

I would also add that even though I have never been to Scotland it sounds like its the place to go to find most of peoples favourites

What do you mean you have never been to Scotland!!! :-)

You can split Scotland into 4 regions for golf: West, Central, East and Highlands.

Lots of great courses in each region offering great golf, great scenery and great experiences. If you are looking to visit I would choose a region and play as my rounds as you can and then come back again and do the next and so on.

You could spend a week in the St Andrew's area alone

Haven't played that many but the Gog Magog old course is truly fantastic. Up and down on the side of a hill in Southern Cambridge. A real test for all golfers.

I think I have just decided what I am doing for my birthday next year, 1 week trip to the St Andrews area

Cannot choose between Walton Heath Old, Woodhall Spa Hotchkin, Saunton West or The Grove! For my 40th next June am going to St Andrew's so if I manage to get on the Old Course then I am sure that might be in with a shout!!

Absolutely. I thought it was superb, some really tastey holes, very good bunkering, nice greens, tight turf. Not a complaint from me.

I guess I'm not a genuine fan of courses with heather... 6ft off the fairway and it's lost or unplayable. I might even prefer fescu than that stuff, at least you can play from it without breaking your wrist!. I'd say Walton Heath is in my Top 10, the greens were definitely top drawer on the day. Woodhall Spa would also be in my Top 10.
