Best course ever played?

Not played that many fancy places, but The Montgomery in Dubai is top of the list, followed by Bowood. Monty pips it because the perfect weather.

When I win millions on the lottery, I will take us lot to Augusta for a quick knock about.

The best course I've played was Royal Birkdale, a few months before The Open was last played there. A 50th birtday present from my wife.

Playing the 18 holes that the best players in the world would be playing gave me a great buzz. The course itself was in immaculate condition as you would expect. But what really made the day was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

Even though there must have been concerns that club golfers such as me (and my brother in law and son in law) would damage the course before "The Main Event", no one showed it. From the Pro to the lady who served lunch, everyone took time to explain the course and the preparations that were by that time well under way for The Open.

This contrasts sharply with some of my experiences at other "better" courses, where, despite having paid a small fortune in green fees, I have been treated almost with contempt.

Thank you Birkdale.

I seem to be struggling a bit competing here! Royal Liverpool for me closely followed by royal Aberdeen, castle coombe is very good and worth a visit. Maybe birkdale in the summer will change my mind.

Yeah, played that, 3 great loops. Free beer all the way round helps too.

Mine would be Ganton in the UK or Old Corkscrew in Naples ,Florida. Millionaires Golf like I've never experienced.

For me the most famous is Wentworth, and one of the best. I ahve been lucky enough to play all 3, inlcuding 6 rounds on the West. The best was a round on the west a few days before the PGA and all the stands were set up, loved it. :whoo:

But best course as in wow would be a round I had at Bali hai in Las vegas, just off the strip so a little noisy with the planes etc but just golfing heaven.

Best would be Riviera Maya in Mexico, just for the all round package, $60 for pickup from hotel, 18 holes with buggy, all inclusive food and drink (alcohol) for the duration of your round, a drink on completion of your round while they clean your clubs then driven back to your hotel! Stunning course and great weather.

In Scotland it would have to be Gleneagles - Kings, however the twice i've played it, it pi55ed down, as it did when I played the Queens :(

I think it's fantastic that there is such a spread of courses and experiences on here.
I probably worded or maybe started the thread wrong as I didn't want to imply that Fancy meant Good. TPC Sawgrass was a great experience overall and steeped in history but I'd also be happy on Gullane No.1.

Good read, thanks guys.

A toss-up between Swinley Forest, Blackmoor, Camberley Heath and Bearwood Lakes with an Honourable mention gor Sunningdale New.
