Best course ever played?

I guess I'm not a genuine fan of courses with heather... 6ft off the fairway and it's lost or unplayable. I might even prefer fescu than that stuff, at least you can play from it without breaking your wrist!. I'd say Walton Heath is in my Top 10, the greens were definitely top drawer on the day. Woodhall Spa would also be in my Top 10.

Many years ago I went to play Moffat and when we got there they had purple Titleists going cheap so I bought half a dozen.

When I got on the course it was covered in purple heather! I'm sure most of the balls were hit once only to be re-sold to the next unsuspecting visitor!

Feeling a bit inadequate as I don't travel overseas and can't really afford the 'headline' courses...

Have had a couple of really great days out at Crail... One day was with a pair of Americans who were staying at the same guest house in the village... Really enjoyed the course and the 'Yanks' were perfect company... Other occasion was with a couple of 'locals' who were again perfect on course companions...

Another worthy of a mention would be Minehead... Holidayed a couple of times at the adjacent Butlins when the kids were much younger... Walked to the course each morning... Had some great companions every day I visited and thoroughly enjoyed the course to boot...

That's what it's all about Steve, it's not about the overseas element or how "top class" it was, for me it's about the experience you had there and that's what makes it the best you have played.

It really isn't...just ask Craw.:whoo:

Seriously though,it isn't even up for debate, there is no comparison.

Your just a tart Dodger!

One was not debating which course had the biggest Willie, I was happier with 36 holes for a 200 mile round trip. Please put your better halfs wooden mixing spoon back in the drawer now and be a good spud!

Interesting reading all the different viewpoints on this thread. Links, heathland, parkland...they all have their fans.

Personally, there isn't a parkland course on the planet that would get in my top 10 as I am a 100% confirmed links/heath fan. But then there are plenty of others who hate links golf because of the unpredictable bounces and variations in conditions. Each to their own I guess.

To answer the original question though, for me it has to be Royal County Down. Quite simply stunning!

Am so excited! My work has just announced that we will be playing Fidra in our annual golf outing! It appears a lot in here!!

woo hoo!! ;)

I think the "best" course I have ever played was TPC Scottsdale on a trip to the States in 1991. Trouble was, I had not been playing that long and hacked it round the course, seriously terrible. What a waste of a green fee. I remember it was in gorgeous condition but can't really remember much about the course itself as I spent so long with my head in my hands.
The best course I have played anywhere near "properly" has to be Carnoustie.
If I had to pick one course to play my last ever round it would be there on a lovely, calm, Summers evening with the shadows lengthening across the links and the skylarks singing.
All would be well in my world.

Certainly the best for me was Royal Aberdeen Balgowrie Links.....it's a shame that off 14 my game struggled to cope and do it justice. If you are interested in the looks of the course may I present Kliene de Zulze Stellenbosch. You also get six bottles of wine and a wine tasting if you book in advance.

It's not too difficult find a Scottish course that is better than the PGA Centenary at Gleneagles.

played it the tuesday after the johnnie walker tournament, grandstands still up etc on a freebie but wasnt overly impressed...loved the surroundings etc tho...
