During our round today my friend and I were discussing club captaincy, has anyone here been a club captain and if so what does it involve. What are the main duties etc.

Also how many members on here would or have been club captain

I've just accepted Vice-Captain for this coming season, which means I'll be Captain April 2013.

From conversations I've had with the outgoing Mens' Captain and Vice-Captain, Ladies' Captain and Vice-Captain and the General Manager, it's going to mean:
I don't pay membership fee when Captain
I represent the club at a couple of comps
I shouldn't be out of pocket financially (but I shouldn't make a profit either, although really can't see how I could!)
I sit on the Committee
I'm expected to be a good ambassador for the club (which means, I'm going to have to curb the violent swearing outbursts!)
I don't have to play in every competition
I get an allocated parking space
I support a charity and ensure at least one competition is hosted for it
I play for the Mens' Team and the Mixed Team in as many friendly matches as possible

The club isn't run by the Committee in the true sense, so I'm not going to be doing what the Captain of a private members club has to do by any means.

Still very humbled to have been asked!

Well done Bratty - I'm sure if I look back I can find the post where you told me that you were too busy and wouldn't do it!

Good for you anyway!

Done it once, and been asked in each of the last 3 years - different club. I prefer the committee work, currently no.2 on greens, out of sight and just able to get on with the job.

Not for me! Tin helmet time for me I think........

Not into all the things associated with it: parking space, name on a piece of wood on a wall, preference on the course etc. Gives off the old stereotypical images of golf clubs to the outside world.

I know there is the "good" side to more than re-dress the balance but not for me.

Don't think I'd ever be asked so all a bit academic. I'd prefer to influence proceedings from a committe position, especially the intransigent stance my club has about embracing new technology like facebook, twitter and electronic newsletters. Its missing so many opportunities especially as its celebrating 125 years this year to promote itself

Cheers, Chris. They've told me it won't be that much time as I don't have to play in fun golf on Friday evenings or play in every comp. I was talked into it! ;)

I was club Captain last year. Hectic diary, great interaction with the other clubs in the area making some lifelong friends. Plenty of golf but played a lot less at my home club due to commitments elsewhere.

Duties are mainly around presentations and social functions at home club and representing the club at major comps and social events around the area (all our 8 local clubs host the other captains at various events). For me the Captains charity was important so did quite a bit towards fundraising throughout the year. Had to "say a few words" at most of our own events. Provide prize for Captain's day etc. The list goes on and it is certainly a busy year. Overall I would recommend it to anyone and don't know a single past Captain who has regretted taking it on.

Quite surprised at a couple of things from Bratty's list. After speaking to our own previous captains they were expected to be present at pretty much all the men's matches, and most of them attend all club comps too (obviously nobody gets upset is you miss a couple but only being playing a few would be frowned upon). Not being out of pocket is the big one though. Certainly at our place the captain spends a huge amount of money in the bar when attending matches/functions, and the club only only provide an initial amount for that. I guess the fact your fees are waived probably means you can use that money too, so may not be so bad at the end of the year.

I was Club Captain in 08-09 season I concur what Bratty said. Personaly I really enjoyed it I was still working full time but managed to fit things in and around the Job. Would i do it again, yes in a heartbeat.

That really pisses me off.

I'm not sure if that happens at my club however I would have the decency to pay my fees like every other member even if I was afforded free golf for my year as captain. Although to be fair its not exactly something on my radar!

Good luck next year.

At my place the Captain ecieves the upmost respect from all the members. Only been a member for a couple of years so only on my 3rd captain. Do not really know anything about the latest one but the other 2 arefantastic blokes and never excersised their right to walk straight onto the first tee. Even though we always offered it they would not take it. From what I have seen it can be tough at times being the Captain being expected to attend things all the time. A couple of my mates played their final of the winter league a couple of weeks ago. The poor captain had to sit around the clubhouse until 6 o'clock to present them with the trophy.

captain gets free green fees at any away day club. cashback baby :)

I'm not sure that is correct

I was asked to be VC this year ... took me 1 second to politely decline
I spend all day every day of eth week "managing/directing/motivating/politicking/handholding/etc" people - the golf course is my opportunity to switch off from that and just relax and support other people.
And actually, my most important people to support are the missus and daughter, so they take weekend priority and i fit my golf around that, primarily friday afternoons. So being at the course and awaydays doesnt fit for me yet. I'll wait until the lottery winners cheque comes along and they can benefit from my lateral syle of motivation and people management :)

currently vice captain at my muni course, only benefit for me is i can be in the first ballot every week. although i have promised to put the vice back into vice captain roll this season. pushing for topless barmaids to start with then a weekend golfing to amsterdam

I organise the mens' matches currently, and pretty much play in all of them anyway, so forgot about that being a potential issue for some, and I'm planning on playing in most of the others also, but it's good I don't have to play EVERY comp/match. Agree with you that only playing a few would be terrible!

Cheers, mate.

I also appreciate your comment about paying the subs, but I should probably have added to that list that I will be funding the prizes for Captain's Day and Captain's Away day, plus part paying the entertainment for Captain's Ball, none of which will be cheap. You're right that it will be cheaper than my subs, though!

Hoepfully you'll be funding the prizes and entertainment for the GM Invitational at Westerham when you're in chage :) he he
