Following all of your advice I went for my first round at my new club, on a new course in a group mainly made up of total strangers. No pressure on me there then. I was also 'persuaded' to play off 24 for the day.

Surprisingly it all went very well. I scored a gross 96 which I was more than happy with, especially as I had never played the course and the greens were a bit quicker than I was used to. Not only that but my partner and I won the 4 ball better ball game in our group and our fourball took the money for the overall stableford. Not a bad day at all then scored OK, got my first card signed towards the handicap, conquered my nerves to a certain extent and came home £7.00 up.

Thanks for all the tips from the Forum, looking forward to the next outing now.

GB72, great show sir. I doesn't matter how low your handicap is you are going to have nerves on a regular basis because this wonderful game is an individual one and you don't have the luxury of team mates digging you out of a whole should you eff it up. The buck stops with YOU and if you can beat the nerves you will be better for it.

How I envy you.
Here I am sitting at home with a sore back, the result of a fall down stairs eight days ago.
Still, it is good to hear someone can get a result.

How did it feel on that first tee GB?

Were the old knees knocking a bit or what?
As some of you know, I'm looking at trying my hand at a few comps this season. I did mention the nerve side of the game, playing with strangers and not having much in the way of playing confidence at the moment.

Glad you came good GB, long may it continue

I thought I could smell the 1st tee fear from here in sunny Berkshire. Great result though and you have proved to yourself that you can do it.

Don't worry if you feel just as nervous next time its all part of the game especially as you stand over that first shot. Deep breath, trust your swing and away you go

Yes Basher, the knees were knocking a bit on the first. Not an easy start on my course as plays along the front of the clubhouse and pro shop. A badly sliced drive could conceivably result in a second shot from the bar or pro shop. Took a breath, took a swing and was delighted with a drive 230 yards and in the middle of the fairway. The driving remained good all day and only lost 1 ball.

Nice one GB72, always nice to get one away on the first. Our practice ground is all the way down the right side of our first (over some trees) and a sliced drive can often end up amongst all the balls on the practice grounds. It's a horrible feeling stopping everyone practicing or warming up whilst you look for your ball.
