Beginners guide to garden ponds.

Thinking of a creating a pond in the garden using sleepers.

Has anyone done this and could point me in the right direction for info.

seriously though ,a garden centre that has a few fish for sale as well as pond liners and the such would be a good place to glean a bit of info.
and of course google is no doubt going to be your friend .
let me know how you get on as im also possibly looking at a small pond in the garden

We had a large pond in our garden when we moved in. its was breeding ground for slugs, midges and mozzies.

it was a lot of work to keep clean, so filled it in.

i would use it to build up one end and make a small waterfall .

My plan is to build the structure with sleepers and line it.

First thing you need to do is decide what you want to keep in it?

Koi, goldfish, wildlife, shopping trolleys?

It sounds like you're looking at a raised pond with the sleepers so I'm guessing it's not a wildlife pond, which is what mine is so I can't offer any experienced advice.

First thing you need to consider is, have you young kids/grandkids?
If so don`t bother with a pond at all........death traps where young kids are concerned

Not at all if the pond is created out of sleepers as the OP suggested....can be raised up then and made totally safe.

I'll let Fish advise on detail, but one thing to get right is to make sure the top edges are exactly level. The water surface will really highlight any uneveness and (pond-wise) there's nothing that looks worse. Other thing to remember is that if small critters can get in the water, you need to make sure they can get out again - so avoid edges that are high/steep above the water surface. Drowned squirrels is unlikely to be the visual effect you're after. (Same applies to kids i suppose ...)
