Whats with them overpaid BBC programme shedulers. The Open preview is on at 2320hrs, way to go to advertise the event and promote it to the younger generation. I know its wall to wall coverage but people do work and sleep.

This Wednesday

Ah right, i'll give it a watch as i will have just got in from work.

The BBC have been told that if they don't sort it out they will loose the Open which will be a shame beacuse as much as i like Sky's coverage of golf you can't beat being sat infront of the tv on Open weekend watching it on the BBC without adverts every 10mins.

Its simple. The BBC don't really give a fig about the golf. I still think once this comes up for renewal the Beeb will lose it to Sky[/

It's only category B on the protected sporting event list so could be done quite easily provided the BBC get highlights or delayed coverage. Masters solution would be most likely with Sky getting all four days and Beeb getting to share access for the weekend. Sky would invest in HD coverage and might even do it 3D.

There is a lot of criticism on here about golf on the BBC. Would I like more golf on terrestrial TV? Of course I would. I can't afford Sky so the only sport I see is free to air. I'm that desperate I record the Masters and watch it till The Open is on...

But let's be realistic events like Wimbledon get a massive TV audience but I can't imagine golf getting anywhere near those viewing figures even with Brits in pole position. The simple fact is that unless you play golf, strokeplay is incredibly dull to watch. That was my perspective until I started playing three years ago. Until you know how difficult a shot is to play it's hard to appreciate the skill.

Fully braced for a public stoning...

Exactly right imo.

Even Cricket, the traditional cure for insomnia, has a 'gladatorial' element to it that Strokeplay just doesn't.

No stoning from me, I totally agree. Many of the current generation of British golfers have spoke of watching and being inspired by Faldo et al when they were young on the BBC. Also the last Ryder Cup was great, but if it would have been live on the BBC it would have had a much bigger impact.

No stones from me Tiger but i do disagree.
It was actually watching golf on the telly that got me into playing it.
It just looked like a great way to spend a day, bang a few balls about, pleasant walk in the fresh air,a stress free pastime.
How wrong was i.. ;)

Ryder Cup totally different kettle of fish. Matchplay, team event, player vs player, much more engaging... But I would say in terms of current pros taking inspiration from watching the like of Faldo, Ballesteros etc on the Beeb they were most likely already playing the game rather than inspired to start playing after watching it. My son's four, loves his golf and likes to watch it on TV but he started playing aged 2...

Television sport will never be the same again because of what Sky have done
