Proving my point James and Brown totally clueless to Phil s gloves....golf has moved on but the dinosaurs at the beeb aint.

I used to like the beeb but I'm starting to agrre with you now dodger.
Now if only I knew someone with a good gravy recipe

I always feel BBC's coverage is just so old school compared to Sky.I can't remember any of the commentators saying anything remotely technical.....golf has moved on but the beeb have not

Dodger, I think you have really got to the heart of the matter with this point. The BBC's coverage (TV and Radio) is far too populist IMHO - they are always trying to reach out to the non-golfer but how about giving some real insight for us lot. It's not as if they dont have the personel with all the pros they have plus Andrew Cotter who I rate. As for Alliss - he is marmit. I like him but I feel he would really work best as a foil for some technical chat from the likes of Phil Parkin or Wayne Grady

just taken the dog for a walk for an hour (after getting soaked this morning and stopping after nine holes the sun is out ) and skyplussed the golf so I can whizz through the crap.
used to like Peter allis but definitely a case of past his sell by date. Always giving wrong holes/scores etc but telling us some unneccesary drivel
Some people berate golf on SKY Channel but I think it is definitely superior to BBC now.

I agree the are trying to please non golfers, but are those people watching it?

l,apparently Alliss picked up a fine gravy recipe from the radio this morning....jeeeeesus!

Bugger! Don't suppose you wrote it down?............... My email address is...............

The Irish bint telling us that the greens are faster today as they have been single cut as opposed to double cut on the previous 2 days......do us a favour hen and go and make the tea eh?

Yeh, not all weather, but actual rain gloves that need to be wet to give amazing grip. You dont even need to dry the grips they're that good.

got to get some of those, had to rescue my 8-i from an incipient lake when it flew from my grip this morning.

any in particular you would recommend?

Yes, classic, especially as you could tell she didn't really understand what she was talking about!! And sorry to all the Scots out there for calling her Scottish in my earlier post - just goes to show that when she starts talking, I don't really pay attention!

But she is more knowledgeable than most of us

A few make em....Glenmuir I have. Only need them when you know your wasting your time trying to keep things dry. They really do work.

Not been a great day. Late night dash to my mum again so got back home and had to pull out of the medal. Decided to put the coverage on at 10 to watch some golf to cheer myself up having not seen any over the first two days thanks to work and south west trains poxy service.

A few highlights, features and chat for a bit. OK a bit of scence setting and then onto the carnage of the wolrds best vs the kent weather. Cup of tea and lets get it on. 11.00 and I haven't seen a ball hit in anger. Now I'm not feeling great with dodgy stomach and all I want is to watch some flipping golf. Come on BBC if you are going on air that early on a Saturday morning then show what you're meant to show. And while you're at it, get some people that can do the jobs they get over paid to do. Hazel Irvine - faultless as a host. Ken Brown - faultless in his on the course pieces and in the box. Alliss - still pretty good and I still like him. Everyone else should start the car (as Bumble would say) and head back out of town. Drivel from the lot of them. Even when the live golf started they did nothing to enhance the difficult coverage (well done to the cameramen for trying to do as best as they could in the conditions).

Mid afternoon with a Brit in the lead and still there is nothing but monotone blandness. No sense of passion. If BBC golf was a colour it would be beige. Inoffensive, conservative and boring as hell. If only Sky could get hold of the coverage and let Radar, Boxall and Murray loose. At least we'd get some opinion whether we agreed with it or not.

No golf for me. Not feeling well. Poorly mother and seven hours of rubbish coverage. Not a great Saturday

Quite surprised to read all the negative comments.

I don't play or follow tennis but I will watch a good bit of Wimbledon. The Open is similar in that its the annual UK golf event that non-golfers take an interest in, nothing wrong with that. All the silly stuff is to make an 8 hour programme a bit more fun for all viewers and given the weather all over the UK there was probably a big tv audience.
It's a horrible wet windy day on a links course, so visually it's going to be challenging to fill 8 hours coverage with rain on cameral lenses and everyone dressed in black rainsuits (except Ricky) but I watched a fair bit of it today and did not get bored with the golf or upset by commentary despite the lack of birdies as I can appreciate the skill required to score
Those guys knocking it round in anything under 2 over par have played really really well on what is clearly a really tough course going by past winning scores there but accentuated by grim weather. Ricky Fowler's effort showed tremendous skill and guts for an American kid so far out of his comfort zone. Outplayed our golden boy Rory easily. DC tee to green was superb. Dustin Johnson is proving just how good a player he is. I think there was quite a lot to take from today and the tournament is set up really well for tomorrow.

A British guy has a good shot at winning the Open, doesn't happen very often so why not enjoy it?

You lot seem very hard to please today!

Go Darren!

Id say if Luke Donald or Lee Westwoe, hell even Ian Poulthard had made the cut, the complaints wouldn't be so loud. As a Northern Irish man I have to say I am enjoying it, I'd bet any Americans were sat watching without any real complaint too.
Being from NI, very often our guys are out of the running in most sports quite early so have learned to sit and enjoy the spectacle of other guys doing well, maybe time some others learned this?

No real complaints about the quality of the golf once it started and I agree with the comments about Fowler and Johnson. However even if Westwood et al had made the cut it wouldn't have made any difference to the hour plus of inane drivel before a shot in anger was shown and the lack of talent in the commentary and on course analysis.

If we take Wimbledon as the benchmark, the whole of the BBC team for that event are infinitely better at what they do and a made up of ex pros much the same way as the golf team are. So what's the difference. I know tennis is a reaction sport but they can only describe the action in front of them but manage to do so a lot better and with far more insight and analysis. Even a one off BBC event like the National has a better build up, more insight and greater coverage for a 14 minute race four hours into the start of their broadcast

Come on Brendy 90% of the people that commentate are useless. I feel you pain about being used to sitting out on sporting events, but as much as it pains me to say this ;) , Homer is correct about the standard of the team.

I think I'm happy becuase they gave Sam Torrance the boot, hated his commentary more than anyone's!
Generally happy with the commentary people they've got, worst for me is Cotter, he's tolerable in small doses..... but only just! :p
