Went to the Maldives and Sri Lanka for a holiday. Whilst in Kandy we went to a massive public gardens. A local said " would you like to see the fruit bats for a dollar". We said yes as we had seen them at night time and they looked like prehistoric pterodactyls. He does no more than gets a 6ft piece of thick bamboo and smacks this tree as hard as he could. The noise was deafening. In about half a second, I did not count them but it seemed like 5,000 fruit bats that were asleep in the trees took flight. The four of us crapped our pants and legged it. He caught me up a minute later and asked for his dollar. Bloody idiot. They are huge.

Can concur with you on the Kandy Fruit Bats. Sounds like we did the same 2 centre tour as you - though we did it 25yrs ago.

Thought the gardens were fantastic, if memory serves me right most of the trees etc are planted by famous people. The hotel we stopped in was apparently the best in Kandy. It must of been decent coz the Australian and Sri Lankan cricket teams were there whilst we were. I was talking to some of the Aussies one night and they were built like brick toilets.

Went on holiday to Bali 20plus years ago and stayed on the top floor of a rice house, they typically have open gable ends to aid ventilation to dry the rice that is laid out.

Anyway we heard noises upstairs so stood on a chair and lifted the loft hatch shon a torch in to see a hoard of huge fruit bats looking back at me.

Got down in a hurry :)

Couple of nights later we were on the veranda having a brew when there was a small earth tremor, these bats took off like something out of a film, there were hundreds of them and they made a heck of a noise and splattered the wife with guano :)

Took a long time to stop laughing, I was in the bad books, but it was worth it :)

We stayed in the Citadel Hotel - right on the river - with loads of bats in the trees opposite and lining the river - they huge!

Always cool to watch them fly over the golf course late afternoon (flying foxes which I think is the same as a fruit bat)

Stayed at a camp site last year and took a short kayak trip along tree lined river, hundreds of bats catching 40 winks during the day until this troop of macaque monkeys passed by and started shaking the branches they were hanging onto making them fly off! pretty cool

We have bats living the the flushings on our roof, quite handy as they eat all the midges and other wee beasties flying around.

Grantown on Spey Golf club had a real problem on a few holes with Midges, so were advised by SNH to install bat boxes around these. it was very successful.
