probably because they can't :
wear jeans
shorts
trainers
hats
and banned from using their phone
No you CAN do all those things in the bar.
It was voted in for this exact reason that younger members families thought it a bit stuffy so we relaxed the rules.
Sorry no hats in the clubhouse except private parties ,weddings etc.

This is MY THREAD so NO BREXIT or I will ask Fragger to issue infractions.

Been to our Club today and was told around 300 members (50%) do not use the bar/food facility
Also if it is mandatory for a levy for new members to have a levy could this be discrimination?
Are you sure that it's 50% not 52 or even 48? ;)

Who would want to sit on their phone whilst out for a meal with family, it's just rude and also pretty ignorant to your family who your out to spend time with. I'm very sure smart casual attire is the dress code at the vast majority of clubs now, very few still have a jacket and tie rule, obviously there are some but not many.

Genuine question......are there people that would join an inferior club rather than pay a bar levy at a better one?

So is there a difference to those whos club puts and extra charge on top of their subs for bar/card and those who clubs set an annual sub that includes a set amount onto your card?

Why would you run the risk of someone joining or not over paying £30 bar levy? Surely you'd rather have members paying £700+ subs and then going in for a pint/sandwich with it being their choice than someone not joining because of a levy which they don't agree with?
Whatever you do there is some down side, howevre my observation from my own club is that the existence of the levy encourages people inot the club house more which in turn makes the club a more attractive place and more income generating which can further improve things.

I play with my 12 year old son, we generally do not go in the bar after a round, we may get a bacon roll depending on time but I don't drink neither does he outside of water.

We do spend money in the clubhouse and I spend around £1,000 a year to be a member along with my 2 sons.

Now we do eat out there a few times a year outside of playing but with a young family and a busy working week I like it just the way it is for me and have no issue with those who do it differently just as I see no reason why they should have an issue with the way I do it, I mean they aren't living my life and I am not living theirs.

It would of course be interesting to see what would happen if all those car park golfers took all their money elsewhere, not sure it would benefit the club they left any.

Suspect that a club will go out of business if all the people that use the course and the clubhouse go elsewhere. For many many clubs the revenue stream in the clubhouse is just as key to the course as the annual subs

Ours is £200 and I have no trouble getting through that and considerably more. I see it as an investment. The club gets a massive extra cash input (I guess somewhere between £200,000 and £250,000) at the beginning of the financial year, members get 20% discount off beverages and 10% off food, members guests green fees, and buggy hire. Some inter club matches also attract the discount.

The way I look at it is I'm effectively getting well over 10% interest on my money.

Win win all round (y)

I knew about the levy when I joined the club over 20 years ago (and also at my previous club) and I had the choice of joining or not.

We have a voluntary scheme at present where the bar card entitles us to a 15% discount on food and beverages. Around 50% of members have a card (around 300).

The Club has had a successful year because of excellent greens, better food. Open comps. are full, member numbers are increasing, green fee income is increasing, good pro. along with excellent practice facilities.

Heard last month The Council were going to introduce a compulsory bar levy of £30 which with£10 subs increase would make £40 per annum.

Club conducted a members’ survey from which many members objected to the £30 bar level, I suggested minimum £50. Despite initially agreeing the levy, and minuting, they have now decided against any compulsory levy.

Thoughts please.

No issue with a nominal bar levy it helps with cash flow as much as anything and I'd factor is as part of the subs same as I do with a phone contract that comes with a tablet or a coffee machine that comes with coffee.

Council imposing and going back on decisions sends a mixed message and opens any future decisions up to challenge or complaint, best to make a decision and stick to it. They should either consult first or go through with it.
