I dont understand the people that are charged a levy but don't use the it. I never set foot in the bar but if I had £50 to spend I'd walk in the bar and buy a £50 round for the guys and gals. or at least ask if you can take some bottles home

If you join a private club which has a levy and that levy is agreed to by the majority of a committee or the membership then you can have no complaints. You're joining the club as it stands and unless a majority of members change their stance then you just either have to get on with it and voice your opinion to the committee or you leave and find a club which already shares your way of thinking. I think the majority of folks see the benefits of having a bar levy, it allows the catering to budget knowing they have a minimum revenue for the year

Why is it a positive? It is an additional tax on members.

An interesting question for those who are at clubs with mandatory levies, what percentage of your members do not use the amount? It is not a loaded question as I don't play somewhere that has one. I am interested to know if the numbers are significant or not. If they are then why are they not enticed in? If not then why bother with it at all?
It was 3% of members never used any of the £50 levy at mine last year.

Oh god - didn’t take long for bloody Brexit to pollute the thread - bugger off to the other threads about it
This is MY THREAD so NO BREXIT or I will ask Fragger to issue infractions.

Been to our Club today and was told around 300 members (50%) do not use the bar/food facility
Also if it is mandatory for a levy for new members to have a levy could this be discrimination?

leave the club? you can't do that because they're holding you at financial ransom with the £1200 joining fee. it's all beginning to make sense now. ?

We no longer have a levy. When we did have a levy I used mine up, just. Main reason that I did not use it much is that my wife works away and so we like to do things together on a Saturday lunchtime. She dislikes the clubhouse because it is not that welcoming to non golfers and the fact that jeans are not allowed limits what she can wear so we go elsewhere for a sandwich and a drink at lunchtime. The other reason is that if I am at the golf club then I am driving. If I am driving I will not even have one alcoholic drink. As my playing partners mainly live in the same village as me, it is easier to head home, ditch the cars and meet in the local with our families for a quick pint or 2.

I will openly admit, I am not what most would see as a club member. I find my club a bit stuffy for somewhere I would generally socialise. I go to play golf and that is pretty much it. That will cause some here to look down on me and that I can accept. When I played rugby, the club was pretty much my life but I find the atmosphere at rugby clubs far more in keeping with how I like to spend my time than I do at golf clubs (massive generalisation I know)
Nothing wrong with that it’s your choice.

A repeat of the question I asked CC. Has the club asked those 50% why they are not using the bar / food? That is a very high percentage and suggests something is not right.

If you join knowing they have a bar levy then what are you complaining about ? You agreed to join the club as it is & to pay the joining fee to be a member of that club to embrace its rules and traditions.

I'm not complaining as I chose a club that doesn't charge a levy. however, what happens if they didn't or decided to double it? sure you can leave but at the cost of your joining fee? kind of screwed ain't ya!!!

Did the club try to engage with them and find out why not? That is a very small number so not an amount I would worry about if I was in charge.
I know some of them they work permanent nights and play after work then go home to bed.

I asked them “why they don’t just come and have a meal with the family to use it up.”
They didn’t really give me an answer just “can’t be arsed” said one.

My club is in a rugby town and the bar is packed fri/ sat but empty Sunday as it’s family day but they all use the restaurant for Sunday lunch.
The club is very well supported by members so 3% isn’t worth worrying about.

Any change of this nature at my club gets raised and voted on at the AGM. Often get people whinging about changes but you never see them at AGMs exercising their vote

Not really, you joined the club and agreed to follow its rules and traditions. If a majority vote for an increase well you have to accept the majority at the club wish to have that, you can obviously voice your regret at the decision but you cant complain about it if the members have collectively come to that decision

It’s part of your green fees to have a little moan!!
You can’t please everyone.
If they don’t vote then they shouldn’t complain really but human nature.
