Bandit or not?

I won't pretend at not being a little peed off over the use of the "bandit" word. My partner and I won the club 4BBB league on Saturday winning 2 and 1 in the final after about 10 matches stretching from October last year. Afterwards all I hear is " well you should win with your partner being a bandit off 17"

I have played with him for 14 years and, yes, he was once (savagely) cut to 9 on Rule 19 but I have played almost every comp with him since and he has the yips when chipping and consequently his handicap has eventually hit 17 going up regularly over the last 8+ years. He plays in every club comp, year in year out so, of course he hits some shots like a single figure guy and some like a beginner. The lowest of the four of us was a 10 h/cap guy of about 67 years old and apart from picking up on one hole on the front 9 was pretty much level par and his partner was an 11 h/cap and me 12.

So

Is he really a bandit for winning the first thing he has ever won?

Is the 10 handicapper not a bandit for his front 9

Ignore the comments, your partner is not a bandit. If he's playing regularly and his hcp is maintained corrctly then it's just petty jealousy on the part of others IMO.

A bandit is someone who keeps their handicap artificially high so that they can clean up on the big comps.

Clearly your mate is not one, He had a good day at the office and should be well proud.

You are all correct of course. It's not so much the term "bandit" that irritates, as much as the phrase " ...... well you should win with him playing off 17" as if over 10 matches and having a second hip replaced over the course of the comp that I didn't contribute. Added to which, I had a blazing row with the last Captain to keep my handicap down to 11 and not 12 during the comp, as they shouldn't have added a .1 just before the winter comp started.

i know where your coming from, some people are never happy unless they win,
if you played off scratch, shot 7 under they'd still moan.

best to ignore them most reasonable folks will take it for it is, a good win

I agree totally with that.

My name is Andy and I am a Bandit.
I keep getting moaned at about my handicrap being 22 and playing off a ladies handicap.
You can see the mentality of the people I play with but it is banter and no offence is ment.
We have a few players who are compuslive cheats by keeping over inflated handicaps or less than legal actions on the golf course.
I don't mind being a bandit it's fun but I do hope to make use of it before I do get cut and get my name on a trophy before it comes crashing down again.

it's shorter than a long explanation about how I play 50 Q comps a year and how dare he/they suggest that I'm a bandit for beating them....doesn't this imply that you are knowingly bandits and, if beaten, it must be by a bigger bandit? etc etc

however, it's taken me decades to see it this way and it always used to affect me hugely when I was fortunate enough to play particularily well with people who didn't know me.

there are bandits in the game, and we all know where they choose to play and in what events - club BB events are the one area they can 'cross over' with those of us who know that the only true objective in the game is how low can you get your handicap.

i can understand you being peeved with the snide and jealous comments from what you have stated they are totally under founded and fuelled by the green eyed monster.

I get more annoyed, I guess, because the inference is that I (with a correct handicap) won because I had a bandit as a partner. During the 9 or 10 games he played some great, good and dire shots and some games were won largely by my efforts and some by his, but, of course, most by joint effort.

By contrast, if I know anyone in the club to talk to, and they win a competition, I alway go to them, shake their hand and congratulate them. To be fair a lot of members have done the same without any "bandit" or reference to handicaps at all. I would be quite content to be called a bandit and have been called one quite regularly, it's the suggestion that I need one as a partner to win that irks, especially as I played with him when he was cut to 9 h/c which gave hime no chance to win anything!

I half agree with the bandit term, I have been called a bandit regularly and play off 15.5 currently but have played off 12 at my lowest and can play to that on occasion.

Does that make me a bandit?

I'm not a bandit!
I've just looked back at my round on HDID and apart from a par (thought I had a few to be honest not just one) and a birdie (Was pleased with that over the water with the pin tucked behind a bunker) it was a pretty ordinary round excluding the 9 on 18.
Played about to my handicap other than the last hole.
