Ball Position

I know this is highly personal and everyone's will be different. I'm curious as to how you choose to position the ball in your stance when you play.

Is there a reason you play the ball where you do?

For me, I try and keep it as simple as possible (... I like simple :D), so I go:

6i - Wedges = Centre stance

5i- 19° Hybrid = 1 ball width left of centre

4 wood and Driver = A ball width inside left heel.

If it's windy, or conditions demand, the ball will move bout a little, but I'm more aiming the question towards run of the mill ball positions for average conditions.

I seem to have the same ball positions as you do. Was recommended these positions at the only lesson I have had.

For me:
Irons - centre of stance
Hybrids - also centre of stance. I had noticed recently that ball position had moved nearer my left foot, so have been paying attention to this. Mave moved it back to centre of stance to encourage descending blow,
Driver - inside left heel

One thing I am having trouble with is ball position when bunkered. Should this also be nearer left heel to make flatter contact?

For greenside bunkers play it forward. You want to connect the sand 2 inches or so before the ball. If it's a fairway bunker then a tiny bit behind centre to ensure you connect with the ball before the sand

When I started, I learned to play everything from the same (except driver) in line with my left breast. Since getting lessons from 2011 onwards, the ball position is varied more into the centre for shorter irons and forward as the clubs progress. It isn't something I consciously worry about too much these days

All of the same spot as my swing is very easy , I move it a bit back for windy days but other then that i use my hands to change the loft on the club....................................EYG

Driver stance depends on what shape I'm going for, I tend to have a slight draw on good shots and my bad shot leak right so if I'm going for a big draw then i move the ball back in my stance slightly, for 3 wood I go for the dame as my driver, irons slightly left of centre and then dead centre for short irons

Always off the left heel. The left hip is the pivot in the down swing so the ball needs to be here with every club. Just adjust the width of the right foot for different clubs.

Keep it consistent!!

Whilst the ball position is important, it is the hand position in relation to this that really matters.

I play with a single handicap player who plays ALL his irons off his front foot with his hands back under his breastbone. I realise for most golfers this would create a divot six inches behind the ball but it works for him. Another has his hands in his forward trouser pocket area with the ball positioned well back in his stance and also has an equally good handicap.

Many of us play with compensating faults we do not know about, so the placement of the ball, whilst important, is only really important if the rest of our set up is spot on.

Is the right answer.

I think a ball position jest inside the left heel is good for all clubs. If you have problems with this then look to your pivot in the downswong, you may be stalling and letting the wrists flip. Ben Hogan agreed with me :)

My ball is also generally forward in my stance - not too far away from the front foot heel
