I know this is highly personal and everyone's will be different. I'm curious as to how you choose to position the ball in your stance when you play.

Is there a reason you play the ball where you do?

For me, I try and keep it as simple as possible (... I like simple :D), so I go:

6i - Wedges = Centre stance

5i- 19° Hybrid = 1 ball width left of centre

4 wood and Driver = A ball width inside left heel.

If it's windy, or conditions demand, the ball will move bout a little, but I'm more aiming the question towards run of the mill ball positions for average conditions.

Honestly, I havn't thought about it for so long I couldn't tell you.

Majority of my irons are centre or slightly forward uf a long iron. Woods off a tee all just inside the left heel and off the deck slightly closer to the centre. Don't know if that's right or not.

varies greatly. depends what I am trying to do. shape and height. been playing it further forward recently for higher and straighter irons.

under pressure I usually have the ball further back keeping it low moving it right to left!

Which was going to be another part of my question but forgot

How important, to you, is where you position the ball?

Not very in your case Hawkeye

It's important, I just don't think about it. When I play later I will try to make a mental note and report back :D

I try to make sure I don't stand too near the ball, whatever club I use, especially after I've hit the thing

Sorry, I'll get my coat. ;)

Until a recent lesson I had my shorter irons right of centre, going down to 60* wedge that was almost level with my right foot. No idea why I did it but it was just something I had always done. A couple of weeks ago everything seemed to go wrong in the one round and luckily I had a lesson the next day. The pro soon put me straight on the BP, basisally nothing right of centre unless it is a downhill lie or keeping it low under trees etc.

For me, driver is off the left heel, fairways, hybrids and 4 iron are about half way between left heel and centre and everything else is bang in the middle. These are of course for 'standard' shots so if I want it a bit lower then I'll play it back in the stance to deloft the club.

When it comes to ball position you need to think about what you the club attack angle to be doing at impact. The low point of the swing is roughly in line with your left shoulder so after the club passes this point it'll be on the way back up. You want a negative attack angle with your high irons, only very slightly down with your low irons/fairways and an upwards angle with the driver.

I'm pretty much in the middle with short to medium irons and about half a balls width forward of that for my 4&5 hybrids and another half a ball width forward for 3&5 woods and inside left heel for driver.

To check that I'm happy with the position of any club, I take a practice swing to bruise the ground a little way away from the ball then step in and swing.

Just forward of the middle of my stance for short and middle irons. A bit further foward for long irons, hybrids and fairway woods and just inside my left heel for the driver. :)

Varies slightly according to the shot I want to play.

Standard for Driver is off the left heel, 3-Wood/Rescue a bit further back.

I tend to play all irons in middle of stance and wedges slightly further back - not quite Pelz position though.

Gareth how accurate are you regarding consistency in where the ball is placed?

You give some fairly specific measures i.e one ball width left of centre etc and just wondering how close you get it each time

Ball for every club but driver. 3 ball widths inside right heel. Left foot widens or narrows depending on the club used. I.e. short iron narrow stance, puts ball in the center. Long irons etc wider stance, moves ball further forward.
Driver about level with right heel

P.s. I'm a lefty.
