How do you position your balls?

Am I right in saying that you should play the ball inside your left foot for all shots and position your right foot at a different position/distance from each other for different clubs eg. driver at the widest to a short distance for your wedges.

I am trying to work on the basics and have got my grip sussed, I think, next is ball position then allignmnet.

So how do you position yours?

i.i.r.c. this is more or less the method Nick Faldo presents in most of his books.

BUT, if I was to play the ball inside my left heel and then narrow my stance enough to get the ball in the middle for short irons, I'd stand so narrow, I'd just fall over, I'm sure :)

My preference is to set up with the ball "where I want it" and widen my stance accordingly. With short clubs, it's not really off the left heel....it's further back.

short irons= ball in centre, club head slightly behind centre
mid irons= club head centre, ball slightly forward of centre
long irons= another club head width ahead of where mid irons would be.

I use this theory: -

put feet together with the middle in line with the ball. I move my left foot about 2 - 2 1/2 inches to the left and my right foot just past my shoulder width for a driver or 3 wood, for mid irons /hybrids I move my right foot to shoulder width, for wedges/high irons I move my right foot about 2 - 2 1/2 inches to the right as with the left.

I find playing my driver off my left heal too much for me, so I sit it in line with the badge on my shirt usually.

I don't believe there is a hard-and-fast rule here. Everyone has a different point where the clubhead naturally reaches the bottom of it's arc in the swing. Find out where that point is for your irons and fairway woods and position the ball about 1" behind it. In theory you should contact the ball before the ground and achieve a good strike. When it come to tee-shots, I think it's matter of trial-and-error. Experiment on the range.
