What do you use to mark your ball on the green?. When playing in knock about games I use one of the Poker chips given away by GM a while back. I used to use it in Medals until one of the guy's I was playing with said that it wasn't an official form of marking and did I have a coin I could use. Am I being ignorant of the rules, which to be fair is a possibility, or is it not an official form of marking?

I think you can use anything you want - Brian Barnes used a beer can once - I use a 5p coin

Do you really think GM would give away a freebie that wasn't an "official" way of ball marking.

Some people may find the poker chips a pain in the arse because they are so big and need moving when around the hole - however, illegal they certainly aren't ;)

How very ridiculous.

I must confess to using one of those poker chip markers for a while. Until a mate I was playing with said, "Sorry, your markers in my way. Can you move it?". "Where to?" I asked. "Your [insert choice swear word] pocket!" came the reply!

I now use a 3 peso coin from Cuba, always with Che face up. That way, if someone wants me to move it, I can do so, but also flip it over, which reminds me to move it back if I can't see Che!

perfectly fine to use, ask your partner to show you the ruling in the rules book. you can use anything you like!

No I didn't think they would but they may have just given them away as something fun to use with your mates. As you say they can seem massive on the green.

Usually use a coin but otherwise I keep a couple of plastic ones in my bag if I don't have any change.

Normally just any coin I have in my pocket.

My girls got me an engraved silver one for Christmas that I'll be using in the summer though :D

The principal thing to remember is that whatever you use must mark the position of the ball precisely. I've always doubted if the famous beer can would do that!

You can use what you want, but I personally hate those poker chips. I use an FFC one, at least it used to have the badge on but much like the team, it has suffered from under investment, is getting a bit old and is fast fading away.

if I am at a new course ill use the one I buy from there! round my home track at the minute its the st annes old links magnetic marker and repair fork!

...until one of the guy's I was playing with said that it wasn't an official form of marking and did I have a coin I could use...

What is it with some people? Some golfers really do give golfers a bad name...

I also wonder where you guys play your golf at times!

Here's the relevant part of the Note to Rule 20-1 Lifting and Marking.

Note: The position of a ball to be lifted should be marked by placing a ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object immediately behind the ball.

Note that the word 'should' is used rather than 'must', so anything goes really - and the Brian Barnes Beer Can is the classic, but they have a preference. A small coin etc is the closest you get to 'official', but that term has no meaning in Rules of Golf.

Your FC was guilty of continuing another Golfing Myth! He probably doesn't think you are allowed to use a tee stuck in the ground - because it's testing the surface (another myth) or clean your ball by wiping it on the ground (another myth). If you had marked his ball, he'd probably insist that You replace it rather than him (myth, but there are Rules). And he'd probably scream at you if you picked up the flag that was lying on the ground that a putt was going to hit (changed from being not allowed to now allowed).

if my ball aint near anyone then a white tee I use. (why did that come out like Yoda:angry:)

Apart from that the Canadian 2 dollar coin is a perfect size, silver on the outside and a gold insert with a Bear on it (ref to Jack).

You guys that use 5p coins must have the fingers of an 8 year old girl! no offense

If I used a 5p coin, I'd never find it again!

Thanks for all the replies, I use a 10p coin now just to keep the peace but interesting to see that the chip is ok to use(if a little on the large side).
