Been using the ball position as instructed by the pro in my lessons, i.e ball forward for long irons , middle for mid irons.

Thing is it just doesn't feel right & is not producing good shots, so today I experiemented a bit, I played every shot from just inside my left heal regardless of which club I was using & just adjusted the width of my stance to suit.

The results were prett.y good, with more consistant & accurate shots, it also felt a lot more comfortable & natural.

Does anyone else play this way? or I am doing the wrong thing by doing this?

I've started putting my ball further back in my stance the more loft i get and its getting some great shots. alot more consistant ball flight with spin on the green.

I used to do it when i first started playing....But then i used to slice the ball alot....

Jack Nicklaus was a big advocate of the constant ball position i think....

Like you he used to just move the with of his stance...
If you look up his website it actually seems to make perfect sense once you see it on video with the different clubs.

I always use to play every shot from the same place as it was the way I was taught and just reduced the stance width as the irons got shorter. Seemed to work well at the time and not sure why the ethos has changed. I presume its to do with modern club construction but maybe Bob can explain why the ball position has to move

Nicklaus played everything from inside the left heel,he just moved closer or further away with his stance.
I like to play my wedges off the back foot, short irons off the middle, and mid/long irons just slightly forward of middle.

This is pretty much what I do.

Wedges/Short irons in the middle of my stance, with the ball a fraction forward for mid irons, same again for long irons and fairway woods then just inside my left heel for the driver.

Can I ask how well you hit your wedges playing them forward in your stance? Do you get many fat contacts?

Tom Watson advocates taking a full practice swing for each of the irons to find the bottom of the arc and then place the ball just behind that.
