I'm hopeless at finding my ball. Lose a lot of balls in a round if I'm having an off day, even on a good day! I keep getting adverts for ball finding glasses, those blue tinted things that apparently really help with finding balls in the rough. Anyone got experience with them? Are they worth it, or just a gimmick? Can't easily find independent reviews.

I have a pair of Oakley glasses, genuine bought through Clubhouse Golf, which are great for playing golf in. They are golf specific lenses but they make no difference when I am searching for balls.

Question - If they are designed to highlight white golf balls do you only put them on when you are searching for balls? Do they distort colours the rest of the time?

I suspect the adverts are hokum. A lost ball stays lost I'm afraid. I know this from bitter experience.

I'm not really sure how 'ball finding glasses' could possibly work. Sounds like a wind-up to me. If your ball is covered by branches or leaves, say, how can a pair of glasses help you?

Glasses designed specifically to find balls, unlike sunglasses which are designed to protect eyes, would be an 'unusual', therefore illegal, device under 14.3!

They are blue tinted and the spin is that they make white things show up a bit like white shirts in a disco. That contrasted with the vegetation not really showing up different makes the ball easier to find. Allegedly.

Good point. I was aware of that. I wasn't really thinking of using them in tournament play, but for a social game with mates it's ok if they agree.

I'm sure they would agree, as long as you share the wealth and help them find their balls as well! And they'd probably pay for themselves in the amount of other abandoned balls you'd find as well! :)

I'm not sure if the're the same ones as my mate had about 5 years ago, but his were snake oil.

It depends on how you look for balls.

1. If there is low rough, yes look over a 5-10 yard square and most times you'll find it.

2. If it is high rough, or loads of leaves about look in little 2 yard boxes, as people tend to scan a large area and its hard to pick it out as easy.

Other things like mark a particular tree, bush etc, and sometimes hitting a provisional down the fairway gives an idea of length on where to look, if hitting the same club again (although look further back as doesn't normally travel as far in the rough, obviously).

Its not an art, a lot of it is common sense, or learned behaviour, along with a few tips.

Oh aye, and don't use Srixons - every time I go in rough, theres millions of the critters.

I find it easy to spot golf balls in the rough later in the day when the light is flatter (dusk); when no sun, or sun has gone down. Now if there were glasses that could replicate that then maybe...though I think it is more that the shadows cast by long grass have gone and so the whiteness of the ball stands out.

I was given a pair of this type of glasses when I started playing golf. Mine had a yellowy tint that make a white ball stand out from grass as described in earlier posts. Not infallible but no doubt helped me to find balls I would otherwise have lost.

I think I still have them lying around somewhere but haven't used them for ages. Might have a look now we are in leaf season!

I got a pair for Christmas a couple of years ago, they didn't stay in my bag for long, I guess they sort of work butr we have a lot of sivler leaves around the course and they showed up really well.

Golf balls are highly reflective to UV light and that's basically how those blue tinted glasses help. They cut out all but the blue spectrum and that's why balls become easier to spot. Only really work in good light conditions though. Annoyingly premium balls with urethane coatings aren't as reflective as other coatings.

If you are thinking of something to help stock up a practice bag then a UV torch and a walk around the course at dusk/night will surprise you.

I heard you can get special glasses to help you find the special glasses that help you find the ball!
