Ball bounces out winter hole

So whats the ruling for when it's the temporary greens with the 4 inch winter bucket holes, and the balls is putted into the ball and it hits the bottom of the cup and bounces out?
Is it dead, or the hole not finished yet?

Have seen this happen too many times to not have a definative answer.

Definative answer lies in the definition of 'holed

And if it bounces out it is not holed...

A ball is "holed" when it is at rest within the circumference of the*hole*and all of it is below the level of the lip of the*hole.

Don't know their exact dimensions, other than they are'nt a normal size, just bigger and seemingly shallower.

Well the regulation size is 4.25" diameter.

I've never heard of clubs using different diameter holes in the winter. Shallower, certainly (and that's what increases the chance of a bounce out), but still 4.25" in diameter.

The point of winter cups is to counter the poorer surface of most winter greens. Why would they be the same size?

The are commonly produced in 6" - 9" sizes (occasionally upto 15") and are normally full depth.

Have to be honest, never seen any bounce out in our larger temp green holes. The ruling is clear though. Mind you on some of our temps getting it into the hole is a bigger lottery of it staying in there

When we used to have the larger size. Bounce out was quite common and it was one of the reasons we switched to standard size holes.

Could another reason be more significant? Qualifiers cannot be played with non conforming holes

Been playing for 20 years and I've never heard of these big holes before. Just shows that every day is a school day!
