Once the chance to shoot under your h/cap has gone, then every one could n/r and walk in. There would be no scores over the buffer zone, and standard scratch would be a nonsense.

Even if I am having a mare, I will stay out and finish. There is always something you can take from a round. Also, once the chance to buffer has gone, cheer up, there is no point in continuing to be miserable. even if I am playing appallingly, I like to see if I will still crack 100, as I don't believe a score in excess of 100 is possible.

Medals are in 3 balls. Once you walk in, the other two will have their rhythm disturbed as they will then have to wait for every shot behind the 3 in front. This will affect them and their score. There is no chance of them being waved through.

The only time I will N/R is if at the end of a nightmare round I lose a ball on the 18th, in a situation where I didn't expect to, and haven't played a provisional. I am not walking back to the tee on the 18th to complete a poor card. I think this has happened once.

There are many good players at my club who N/R at the drop of a hat, because they don't want others to see what their score was. This is pathetic.

I played on Saturday and probably had the worst round of golf in my life. As my bio states I'm a 15 handicapper and although I have not even played for a year I was absolutely disgusted with my score of 98! Par 69.
No matter how hard I tried i just couldnt get it together, ok we all have bad rounds but 29 over! :D
I even had 30mins on the range and was hitting all of my irons really sweetly and my woods were slicing but nothing too bad.
Anyway its narked me all weekend because I look forward to my one game every week and this happens. Tomorrow's another day I suppose.

Spare a thought for us poor saps that think 100 gross is a reasonable score.

Just to be clear I wouldn't NR because of a bad score, I might NR if I just wanted off the course early to do something with the family, if the weather was atrocious or if play was painfully slow for example. I am quite indecisive sometimes about whether I want to play - you must put your name in by Thursday then come Sunday you're not so keen but you go along anyway, then wish you hadn't after you've hung around the 3rd tee for 15 minutes.

I do accept that it is bad form and shouldn't but occassionally I do. Sorry.

I'm so stuck in a rut with golf that it's rarely exciting anymore (especially on your home course) but I do like the exercise, fresh air and company(sometimes).

If however NR's became illegal and you got kicked out of the club for example I wouldn't mind that either. Our club has no issue with this so as long as that is the case, neither do I.

Just to clarify, when you guys talk about an N/R do you mean not handing the card in at all? I would always have said that I had an N/R in a medal when I don't have a valid score i.e losing a ball unexpectedly and not going back to the tee - but the card gets handed in regardless.

If you hand the card in, the scores before the point at which you N/R count towards standard scratch. If you don't hand it in, then obviously SS is affected. It is still an N/R, as you haven't returned a score.

Whether I shoot 85 (buffer zone is 84) or 99 makes no difference to me, it is just 0.1 back. I try to always complete, and post a score.

Sorry fellas, what does NR stand for except Northern rock?

I have walked off has been when my grips and gloves had been totally soaked leaving nothing but thinned shots and wet clothes. I did once walk off during a round on my own due to the course being so slow, I got an extra couple of pints in on a lovely sunday afternoon.

this is one of those unfortunates where NR can mean both Not Returned (ie card) and not recorded (as in score for a hole).

The very bad news is not to return a card having entered and started a comp even if you have not recorded a score for a hole; as murph says, this affects CSS.

I think weve all been at the 'walk off' state in comps at some stage. I belive (though I might be out of date) that the only time you can ligitimately walk off is after disqualification of if you are ill, Oh and of course if your designated group go awol leaving you alone with no one to score.

Myself, I have walked off on 3 occasions, one where I was genuinely sick, one where the two guys I was with were having a heated exchange and one guy stomped off to report the other and he then buggered off because of it, leaving me alone and the other time was when I was given a torrent of abuse for asking what a player had scored on a hole as he took it that I was calling him a cheat, I didnt know the guy but to save me smacking him one, I left and gave my explanation to a committee member and heard nothing about it. But I dont condone leaving a comp but at the same time I can certainly understand why people sometimes do and in some cases sympathise.

Sorry Billy. but retrospectively would you be happy coming back with a score of 135? We all try to play to our standard I suppose. Perhaps someone with a 3 handicap would be p'd off coming in with 88?

Thanks for the replys though guys you have made me feel better :)
