During yesterday's round I endured the worst lie I have ever found myself in - short of being in such deep clag that you can barely see the ball.

My drive ended in the first cut of rough and when I got there I found the ball in a shallow dip in the ground - the ball was about half showing. The really downside was that it was resting against a 1 inch thick tree root. I couldn't get to the ball at all.

Had to hit the root first and hope that the ball went somewhere near where I wanted it to. Of course it didn't, only went 25 yards scuttling off left.

Anyone had a worse one than that?

Apart from one right in the base of a tree trunk I can't think of any worse than yours. I've had some in deep rough that have nestled right down and a huge hard swipe has just about got it vaguely back in play but I guess thats the price I paid for being so far offline

At least you could see the root!, I've had several where I've swung full tilt and almost snapped my hands off as the club cracks into some hidden oak just under the surface.

Had a weird one today, I was next to a tree and had a 3inch thick branch through my arms during the swing (make your setup and get someone to feed a drainpipe under your left armpit and between your arms)... I punched it about 60y with an 8iron.

Have also played from several lakes and one round-a-bout when I was in Spain (shanked it over the fence and my friends made me go play it back onto the course...I have a pic somewhere of me standing on the round-a-bout wedge in hand).

I did once hit a ball into the face of an over sanded bunker. The ball plugged and then the sand poured back over it. It took us two or three minutes rooting about just to find it. Took one swing at it just for fun and managed to uncover the top of the ball, then took an unplayable.

This is more bad luck than anything. Middle of fairway hit a wedge almost broke my hand as i hit a massive rock under the grass. Now ive got a chunk out of my wedge :(

Underneath lip of bunker sitting in rabbit hole. I got it out but had to take part of the lip with it.

You could've had a free drop from a rabbit hole/scrape or any other lie showing burrowing animal actvity!

Ian, you could have taken it back in line or a drop, for the risk, it could have been worth considering.

Worst lie for me would have to be Sennelager Golf course, Drove into the first cut, found my ball nicely trapped in a small fallen branch that looked like a little hand grabbing it with one of its twiggy branches underneath so it couldnt be moved and to top that it sat facing the raised edge of a previous hacker session, but the only direction I could swing with any hope of at least getting it out was hampered by an overhanging tree branch, I just spanked the whole thing in hope, and amazingly I moved it 10 yds into a tree and luckily 5 yds onto a fairway divot hole. Most unusual lie was at Tetney golf course. On the third, a par 5 that I can reach in two, I blasted my tee shot but it drifted right with the wind and I thought it had landed in the first cut of rough in line with the new trees that lined the fairway. When I got there, the ball was sat in the 'V' of the sapling at head height and no matter which way I tried to see a way of hitting it out, it was just impossible to strike it at all.

i once was on the last tee and said all i need to do is not put it in that rough - 20 yards right, 150 yards long.
well i hit a sorcher, but... it hit a branch rolled along it, hit the road and bounced into this rough that was about 20 cm thick :(

birdieman this was about 3 years ago when i was just starting playing didnt really know many rules, plus my friend betted me £5 that wouldnt get out, you should of seen his face.

Not mine, but someone I was playing with.

A full blooded three wood that didn't get into the air and which drove into the back edge of a fairway bunker about 20yards in front. Ball was embedded a bit more than its own depth about two inches below the grassy lip of the bunker.

I doubt even Tiger could have got it out in 1 with a shovel.

Plugged under the lip of a bunker is about the worst i have had, think yours edges it though, tough break.

Rule 25-2 Embedded Ball.
"A ball embedded in its own pitch mark in the ground in any closely-mown area through the green may be lifted, cleaned and dropped without penalty, as near as possible to the the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green. "Closely-mown area" means any area of the course, including paths through rough, cut to fairway height or less."
