my mate text me tonight to tell me this story...

his girlfriend whos off 11 was playing matchplay today against a woman of 70 years who plays off 10. the elder lady won with only 6 clubs in the bag.

driver
3 wood
5 wood
7 wood
7 iron
putter

apparently she was an awesome short game. tap in pars all day.

I asked does she not have a sand wedge. it turns out she has one, but doesn't bring it anymore as she is never in bunkers.

she played off 5 at her lowest with this same bag set up.

I tip my cap to this woman, she sounds like a legend :)

I mentioned it on here previously I had my best gross score in 2012 when I played a round where I only carried 7 clubs in a pencil bag. Will have to try it again!! :)

take a peek in senior golfers bags. especialy the women. at times there is very few irons in there. all sorts of woods etc.

senior golfers, again especialy women play a diff game to the rest of us. they dont hit it hard enough to create lots of spin so they tend to nudge the ball up the middle and rarely leave the fairway.

an example of a shot this woman played apparently was a half 7wood frm 60yards to two feet.

why would she carry a gap wedge if this is how she plays? lol infact what use is most irons if thats how she plays.

I've played with a few like that.... Never off the fairway and generally awesome short game. Very effective round a short course. There's more than one way to play the game.

A friend of mine carries a nine wood.... Which is a bonkers club but used to great effect (and she's actually a relatively long hitter)

My girlfriend has only an 8 iron a sand wedge and a pitching wedge , two hybrids 6 and 7 and a 5 wood and driver

She's a long way from playing off ten though

it never ceases to amaze me the way senior players can run the ball in. its a real weakness in my game but it seems to be bread and butter for the oldies.

last year I rented clubs to play at allerton muni. I was given an 11 wood believe it or not. useless to me as it was like a 9 iron. im sure some of these elder short game wizards could show me how its done.

Playing a short par three recently. I hit a decent three quarter pitching wedge shot which took a hard bounce so ran maybe 15 feet past the hole. My friend pulls a wood out (turned out the be that 9 wood), which was a worry as she knocks a driver past 200 yards, and hits a sweet shot, higher flight than my wedge, landed softly and finished about 6 feet from the hole. Like magic!

class. I swung the 11 wood out of my boots and it went higher than it did length wise. suppose you just have to know when and where to use these kinds of clubs.

Great story and a philosophy I whole heartily agree with. I think golf should be played with 8/9 clubs in the bag. Whenever i go out in the evenings with 8 clubs in the bag (I alternate between odd and even irons) I shoot pretty much the same scores that I do with a full set.

piss off andy. you could knock it round with a brush shaft with your classy swing :smirk: I want room for another wedge!

I would agree that you don't need 14 clubs to play well, but I think you would struggle if one club wasn't at least 48 degrees.

Played against an older woman last week and she asked on the 14th with a very questioning tone "do you like hitting the ball so high Amanda?". I so wanted to reply "no I'd rather scuff it along the ground every shot like you do" but refrained. By the way she was off about 30 and rising but obviously liked mis-hitting every shot!
