Average driver distance now and then - R&A

It's not to work my distances out, I'm quite happy that I know them.
I just thought it might be interesting to work out an average distance based on a real round rather than saying my average distance is <insert guess here>.

One of the reasons I ditched my skycaddy for a laser was to resist temptation to measure a winter flusher that's gone 210!!!! :(

You might get higher air temps down there, but for me, i've just lost 10-15 yards on each club right though the bag.

I know how far i carry my drives, usually the fairway bunker at 240 on the 2,3,5, 10, 18:(

I am so glad you said that... I had one today ! God I felt a wimp. Plus it was a light frost but not solid underneath so it was just killing the distance. The best I managed was 260, and the average was 235... With a yellow titleist dts solo ( which refused to get lost seeing as I have had them for 2 years) ... But it was the putting that ruined my score ( you could see the skip marks as the ball slipped over the green)

But I guess for most of us that's the truth of it though isn't it :) We gleefully accept the cracking, but probably anomalous distances we get in great conditions, and try and 'hide from' the 'curious' distances we get when conditions are not so favourable.

I bet my stats this weekend will be very similar.

Though we are lucky as far as fairway condition is concerned as we are principally a Surrey heathland course, and as the soil is very sandy our fairways drain very quickly and don't hold water. This means that we generally don't get shots that plug - or land and hop a few yards out of their pitch/plug mark.

I have a measure shot function on my GPS but have never used it. I assume it is easy so if I remember and the course isn't frozen tomorrow, I will try to measure all my drives.

OK so here it is. Luckily my driver was working because the rest of my game was awful. Conditions were good, practically no wind and a very light frost that only really affected the 2nd hole. I hit 8 drivers with the following results...

242 (Fairway)
208 (Fairway)
228 (Fairway)
223 (Left)
257 (Fairway)
261 (Fairway)
234 (Right)
238 (Fairway)

Average: 236

Well, surprisingly I remembered. I'd class about 10 of these as good hits, and all but 1 of the rest was acceptable. The remaining 1 was a horrible low hook.

Temp was around 8°, and the wind I'd guess at 5-10mph. Soft fairways but not too boggy.

Average 254yds which is actually better than I was expecting.
Average of the good hits was 263.

Good stuff from a couple of single figure boys. I didn't play other than a few holes yesterday afternoon. Took 3i off the tee (as I often do when just playing a few). Best I hit was on our par 5 first - playing about 500yds - perfect conditions though quite soft underfoot. Uphill tee short - about 190yds. Then hit a 5i about 170yds (draw plus landing on downhill slope) then 8i about 140yds to about 6ft. Didn't bother with the putt - but easy par :) Yardages not 'great' I suppose, but I hit the shots to pretty much where I'd expect to hit them. I'd say these were my OK/good yardages at the moment for these three clubs.

I had a poor day with the fault I am working on returning and spraying the ball right. Over 9 drives, both good and bad, I averaged something in the region of 215-220 yards.

I didn't realise Leicester was at altitude;
Good hits for this time of year, i crunched a few yesterday and i doubt it any went past 230:(

It's probably a few degrees warmer here as well.

I was expecting to top out around 250, with an average of 230-240. I guess the fairways must be running further than I'd guessed.
I give it a good smack for my size, but I'm not particularly well built!

With regards to the original point of the thread, when I started playing in the 80's 250yds would be huge, and I considered anything over 200 a good hit. I was smaller then AND had a worse swing, but I'd still say most of the increase is down to equipment.

I went out on Saturday and played 13 holes. It was approx 7 degrees so not too cold but the wind was around 15 to 20mph, fairways were soft so the drives into the wind didn't have any run on them.
I hit driver 6 times as follows:
1st hole: 226 yards (into the wind - no warm up & caught this one a little low and out of the heel - hole is flat)
3rd hole: 241 yards (into the wind - low of the middle but a little low - Hole plays downhill)
5th hole: 223 yards (into the wind - pretty solid strike - Hole plays uphill)
6th hole: 298 yards (down wind - hooked this one a little and caught the tops of a tree which didn't look like it effected it to much & was a good strike - hole is fairly flat but you play from a raised tee)
10th hole: 321 yards (down wind - best strike of the day - hole is flat)
12th hole: 251 yards (into the wind - again a really good strike - hole is flat)

Average was 260 yards which given the ground conditions and the fact I hit into the wind 4 times and down wind only twice I'm pretty happy.
