It's part of the story. If this is the case, then why is the Old Testament included in the Christian Bible?
Is it just there as a warning of the things to be avoided?

It's people that are intent on destroying each otherTwo of the many religions around the world which seem to be intent on destroying each other. Do their 'gods' support this? Is it in fact the same 'god'.
How many other 'gods' or religions are there?
You appear to have a problem with others holding a belief. You can leave them to their belief and live your life as you wish. Some believe with no proof that their God wrote the 10 commandments and gave them to Moses on Mount Sinai.
It's a bit like saying the Bible is true because the Bible says so
We are all free to accept or reject it. Why do you have a need to know where and when that God said (or sat) that or wrote it down? When and where did that 'god' sat that or write it down?
What if another 'god' made such an instruction?
Again, the religions aren't intent on destroying each other, mankind is solely responsible for this. Two of the many religions around the world which seem to be intent on destroying each other. Do their 'gods' support this? Is it in fact the same 'god'.

Yes, but is there not a case for believing that their religions drive the zeal with which they pursue their hatreds and thus their extreme actions?Again, the religions aren't intent on destroying each other, mankind is solely responsible for this.
I wish it were this simple. I'm fine with others being as religious as they want....go to church 5 times a day.....donate their money to the church etc etc...fine with me......as long as it doesn't cause problems for other people. The vigorously religious can't seem to stop trying to force everybody else to live by their rules. If you have been keeping up with how Christianity-leaning hard liners in the US are trying to get religion into schools etc etc....it's a bit scary. You appear to have a problem with others holding a belief. You can leave them to their belief and live your life as you wish.
Do you believe without religion people would have lived in peace?Yes, but is there not a case for believing that their religions drive the zeal with which they pursue their hatreds and thus their extreme actions?
History indicates this. ( until you consider Roman history)
I don't agree with religious based schools, the state should be secular in my opinion. The mainstream churches are responsible for distorting christianity.I wish it were this simple. If you are accusing me of being biased against the church, you're probably right. You appear to have a problem with others holding a belief. You can leave them to their belief and live your life as you wish.
Just to add to this why on earth should there be 26 bishops (with voting rights) in the House of Lords?I don't agree with religious based schools, the state should be secular in my opinion. The mainstream churches are responsible for distorting christianity.
I agree fully.Just to add to this why on earth should there be 26 bishops (with voting rights) in the House of Lords?
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I agree completely with your condemnation of these churches and the vile people in them that have committed these crimes. If you are accusing me of being biased against the church, you're probably right.
When you're 8 or 9 years old and your local vicar keeps trying to put his hand up your shorts, you tend to remember that sort of thing, so you'll forgive me for not being a big fan. And before you tell me not all vicars are homosexual pedophiles, I know but watching the news over the years, not a lot seems to have changed.
Here's a fun fact.....
''The Catholic Church in the United States has spent over $3 billion in settlements and awards related to clergy sexual abuse''
And that's just in the US in my lifetime.
This from October LAST YEAR.....
And if you want nearer to home, ex bishop Peter Ball

I guess that's what forums are for. It's been a well mannered discussion so far so I'll leave it that way. Thanks allSo the initial OP started the thread by saying he now don’t believe in the good Lord God. Or any of them.
Nowt wrong with that at all.
However in a short period of time this thread has turned into the religious equivalent of the LIV thread and a few others on the forum.

No, which is why I alluded to the Romans.Do you believe without religion people would have lived in peace?
If 'god' didn't say or write it then a person or people wrote it. That tells us nothing about that 'god' or what they require of people. Only about the person or people and what they think their 'god' requires. We are all free to accept or reject it. Why do you have a need to know where and when that God said (or sat) that or wrote it down?
It certainly has and that is a massive credit to all posters. But it is Groundhog Day for the thread.I guess that's what forums are for. It's been a well mannered discussion so far so I'll leave it that way. Thanks all
Did you just compare you giving advice as the same thing as the instructions of God?A friend in need reaches out for my help as he knows me as a good friend. I can offer my friend what I consider to be good advice, indeed I can suggest that even if he doesn't like what my advice means for him I consider it best for him. It is then up to my friend to take my advice - or ignore it. If he ignores it and things go wrong or others are hurt, as a friend I don't gloat and say 'told ya so' or 'you nasty person', but instead I am sad for my friend but support him and then offer to help my him sort things as best he can. But again, it's up to him whether our not he accepts my help. I can't or don't fix things for him - that's for him to do. If at the outset, or indeed at any time, he takes my advice and things turn out OK, he is more likely to reach out to me in the future for help. That's how it works.
