As the question, when you are playing a hole where you know the risks outway the percentage, but you know if you take the risk theres a reward, however the percentage is low,are you a player that takes that risk or would you play the percentage.Or do you play the hole differently for different comps?

Strokeplay competition play the percentage and hope for birdie from the putt. 4BBB probably go for it if partner in good position.

Chris

There are certain par 4's on our track that are long, only 2 of the buggers but I have learned to play them as 3 to the green and hopefully 1 putt. A 4/5 is guaranteed playing that way where as having a swish at them just doesn't bring any reward. I'm a percentage guy.

I usually take calculated risks. As long as it's not a ridiculous shot to take on I normally go for it.

I, ordinarily, only move the ball one way so if it fits in with my shape then it's bang tidy for me.

im genrally a risk taker depending on how my drive goes if its not in trouble ill go for any flag yes it annoys the hell out of me if i miss but aint that the fun part of golf why we keep going back

He who dares wins Rodders!!!! Depends really on how I am playing or feeling. I have had days when I am playing well and take on everything and it comes off. Also had days when I am playing great just plotting my way round and playing percentage golf. It's a funny old game!!

I normally am a risk taker, but if i have a good round going may play the percentages over the last few holes. Perhaps play for the fronts of the green where there is less trouble, rather than take on the pin and go over the green.

Hate playing safe, and still messing up, so would generally rather go for it. ;)

I know I play better golf going for it, but still can't help trying to play percentages (otherwise known as quitting on it). Sometimes I wish the old brain would get the flip out of the way.

If it really is not enough reward for too much risk then I'll only go for it if either my round is worthless, I need the reward to make it worthwhile, or it's BB and my partners already safely on.

Most of the time at my place though you can go for shots in such a way that the bad outcome isn't the end of your score.

Some and some.
Our 1st is a real risk/rewarder. Fairly short but a carry over a stream that you really don't need as the first shot of the day. PLus it narrows with trees and clag one side and bushes and the stream on the other.
A smooth 3 wood and you're sitting plum in the niddle with only a 9 or 8 iron in. But get it wrong and any number is possible. Most of us lay-up with a 6/7 iron, play another then wedge it on to try and 1 putt.

In a Medal, I'll lay-up unless I'm feeling really good and loose. Stableford I'll give it a go unless the wind's in the wrong direction.
So all in all, if I feel good then I may go for it, but any doubts and I don't.

i wud say risk taker cause percentages take too long to work out!

The best example i can give was our club championship in 2005 i think it was. I was 3rd in the clubchampionship and on the 17th in our 2nd 18holes of the day. i was 3 behind i think or it mite have been two but anyway i was playing with the leader. I tried to drive the green thinking id make an easy birdie. Took an 11 after 3 out of bounds. I wish i had done percentages that day

Pecentage every time. I always hit an iron on our short par 4 second. Everyone else hits driver. I try to lay up to leave 100yds approx when I can't get to a green - I prefer full shots to 50 yard shots. I will only go for it if I am on my own to practice. If it works, then I will test it out in a non competitive round and when I am confident about the shot it will be played in competition.

Not brave at all.

Risk Taker for me.
I usually only hit 2 or 3 fairways a round so I am not left with much of an option but to go for it on most occasions. If I took my medicine every time, I'd be playing off 18 instead of the 16 that I struggle to play to!

Part of the reason I'm off 10 is that I try to do too much to often. Too many risks, I know I shouldn't and am working on not but it's tough not going for it!!

Playing the percentages is all about weighing up the risks against the reward. In stroke play it is usually a poor choice if you take on too much, as the most you will gain is a single shot where you may lose more shots (maybe the whole round) if things go wrong. A shrewd "safe" shot keeps the round going and maintains momentum. I tend to stay safe in medal play and be patient.

On the other hand, in matchplay or fourball etc it's a whole different situation. The potential losses are not too bad and the rewards in terms of not only the match but what it can phsycologically do to the opponenets are huge. So in this situation I'm usually very agressive.

Have been trying to play the precentage game much more in competitions and I think it is working. However nothing like going for a shot and it working and so Saturday morning roll ups are all about death or glory golf.

We've got a few risk reward holes on our course.
The outward nine ends with the hardest hole on the course - a stream and 2 large lakes divide the tee-side from the green. Again the wind is vital, downwind the lake and stream are in play. A drive anyway right will require the approach to be played over the lakes to the green and may even have to contend with a large tree situated between the 2 lakes. The green is split level protected by 2 bunkers and the facing approach shot has to deal with the green at its shallowist from front to back which is only about 8 yrds wide. Par here is excellent.

The consevative approach is around the 2 lakes after the tee shot but from here most will bogey the hole.

Iv played this hole both ways and so far its been about 50/50....
It does set the tone for the back 9 though if you come off with a par or better....For my 2nd shots on this hole depending on the wind again, iv hit everything from a 3 wood to an 8 iron :D

risky man me.

if it has ever came off before ill give it a go again. no matter the bearing of the match.

im a pleasure to play with LOL
