Are gps devices banned in comps at your club?

We're allowed them. The rule came in ages ago.
I've never seen anything written, but I did double-check with the pro and capt.
Clubs yet to bring in the use seem to be in the minority now.
(but I could be wrong!)

The fact that the rules disallow them and then each club has to have a rule allowing them is so arse about face it's untrue. It's no wonder there's so much confusion. Add to that the debate around the disabled motocaddy temperature gauge, smartphone apps, ability to accessing the internet etc and the whole issue is a complete mess.

As above, I think they will allow them at the next revision, most do already. The only one near us that doesn't is Royal Lytham..... well they wouldn't would they?

For me smartphone apps are fine, just don't use it to break the rules and you will be OK. Just like somone with a Skycaddie on their bag and a smartphone in the bag.

All the rule needs to say is that the use of an optical or electronic distance measuring device is allowed providing is does not show any other information such as blah blah when in use. Simples.

it's all bull.

That it is Tommo. But I can name half a dozen rules that are bull too.
Whatever the reasoning - rules is rules.
It's just been confirmed that the new groove rule made little or no difference to Pro Comp scoring, driving distances, fairways/greens hit etc etc etc. More bull.
But rules is rules.

Yeh but they dont try it, they ban it. If we all knew the wind speed was 16 MPH into our face in a tree lined 180 yard par 3 what would you do........add 2 extra clubs. If you didnt know, what would you do, add 2 extra clubs because you know its a stiff breeze.

Whatever the reasoning - rules is rules.

Trouble is, that for measuring devices "rules ain't rules"

The thing is that the R and A are quite happy for every club in the country to bring in a local rule allowing for the use of these devices in competition, and then some Major General Stuffed Shirt, convinces the club committee not to allow them as "good golfers don't need them, why, in our day ....." blah blah and thats it, you don't get to use a Sky caddie etc. Most other players in most other clubs can use them of course except yours because some old gits think it's cheating!

Chris

Can't use them at Royal County Down, to preserve their caddy program. Hmm, £160 per round, and they want you to pay more for a caddy?

The "rules is rules" bit is relevent to the use of Smartphones. I agree completely with your point about Major General Nuisance and his Cronies.

As mentioned earlier I think R&A will clarify all this at the next update. I don't think they expected GPS to be as commonly used as it is.

SGU are still in the dark ages and don't allow the computerised yardage charts, that have been proven to speed play up, in their national events.
Is this in connection with County team events ? I am sure I read recently that some teams had used them, others hadn't and a final decision was pending.

Not just top level golf but also any of their Captains/Secretary Champ,National Club Champs etc.

Wouldn't worry too much about not being able to use it in comps at your club.
I pretty much know what club to take from any position (usually bad) at mine from past experience.
I have a sky caddie but often forget to charge it and don't miss it that much when the battery goes. different story on a strange course though.

We're allowed them. Rather than relying on your mates advice why not contact the handicap secretary or the pro and get a definitive answer. Very few seem to ban the main ones now (Sky Caddy, Cally, Shotmeister etc) and it will only be the ones that give temperature, weather and changes in contouring that can't be used

I just got a reply from my email to the Owner of our Golf Club ( it is a family owned business golf club )and gps devices are banned from use in comps as the consensus of the exec committee see it as creating slow play on the course!!!!!!

He goes on to tell me in the email that the best person to talk to is the competitions / handicap sec who he says has very strong views against these gps devices !!!!!!

Not had a reply from the email that I sent to the comp / handicap sec as yet so I am now looking for my hard hat ;)

another stone age reply. Ask him if thei promote slow play why there has been discussions about the use of them on tours to speed play up.

got to love the older generation, oh how they hate change!

Utter tripe! it has to be quicker to look at a Skycaddie than to pace up and down to the 150 yard markers and the consult the yardage book. Old tw*ts who don't want one themselves and so nobody gets to use one, especially as they will be made legal in due course.

Our Comp sec just replied to my email!!!

He says that distance measuring devices are allowed for general play and winter comps but NOT official club comps :D

Together with the Owner stating that the exec committee ( of which the handicap sec is on ) states that their consensus is banned because it causes slow play :D :D

He goes on to say that the subject will be up for review by the exec committee again in March as it is every March before the season begins :D :D :D

Whats that all about

Thing is, unless any new data comes to light, or one of the old gits gets given a dmd for xmas by a deluded familly member, why are they going to change their minds?

when I first bought mine they were banned in comps at my club. they later changed the rule to permit their use but never promulgated the change so I played for some time without it when it would have been legal.

Same here, were banned when I first asked but the new local rule was then added. No advertising of the change just an entry in the local rules section at the back of the fixture book the next year.

Write to the owner and ask him if he is prepared to see members resign and leave in the current climate as you feel strongly enough over the subject to do exactly that.

As a commercial concern i would be interested to see his response and the conversation with "Mr Up his own Arse with his sense of self importance" committee member.

Well said. I have mine on the bag in comps and I hardly ever use it.

However, I hit a tree on the 2nd and the ball bounced back towards me leaving me an unknown distance (there's no 150 on this hole) and skycaddie said 179. 179.5 yards later, I rolled it in for a birdie. Get in! :)

I'd make sure it gets raised at the exec meeting and show them the link to the EGU study Dodger kindly put up. Think it is self explantory really. Not sure the argument about losing members if you can't use them will stand up mind
