are driving range balls rubbish?

Range balls are designed to go as far as the range owner wants. If they own a small range then they can buy 60% distance balls. This is usually identified by some form if marking. Srixon use a different stripes to denote what percentage ball they are

I wasn't aware of this, I've always wondered sometimes when attending 2 different ranges why my yardages were all over the place, I rarely go to a range now though, unless I need to work on my driver as we've got a practice area that is good for anything up to a decent 5 iron, I only use this now for gapping as you use your own balls, in saying that, I then only use the 2 main balls I use on the course, not pick ups.
