Anyone use a putting chipper?

You don't need one, you can use virtually any club in the bad from 3w to SW to get the ball onto the green and up to the hole.

During our Junior coaching at the golf club last summer, one of the sessions was on exactly this type of improvisation. Incredible results if you put in a little practice with some unusual club choices ;)

Martylaa, you are lucky you made your last post coz I was gonna ban your ass ;) ;)

As a moderator of this fine forum I have had to read personal verbal attacks, sexism, fascism, libel, bigotry and even threats of personal violence but I have NEVER read such a disdurbing topic. As a noob I am going to cut you some slack if you promise your fellow 'rumers you will never mention the 'C' word again. ;)

OK lots of ribbing (totally justified :D ) but I guess there's a serious underlying reason for the question.

If your chipping is letting you down, and mine did (and still does occassionally) I would recommend a lesson. As indicated above you can use just about any club in your bag to chip and anyone can turn themselves into a deadly chipper but you need to have the right technique and have confidence in what you're doing. That also means you need to practise your chipping a lot. Most golfers have suffered with duffed and bladed chips at some time (e.g.Westwood on 18 yesterday) after doing the hard work to up to the green and it's really dispiriting.

Turning 3 shots (or 4 :o ) from the fringe into 2 is a great way of saving shots. Also don't be shy of putting from off the green when it's the safest option. Noticed the pros seem to do this a lot these days. Not so easy this time of year but in summer when the fringes are in good nick it can produce excellent results.

Oh the shame! :o but I swear that as an ignorant newbe i was unaware that using my chipper would offend the golfing Gods.
Thankyou all for guiding this lost soul back on to the path of righteousness. Although I had developed quite a reasonable game around the green with my trusty chipper I now realise that it was the Devis work and that I was being made to pay by slicing or hooking all my drives and duffing nearly all my iron shots. No wonder I can't break the hundred mark.
Could using one of the Devis tools also be responsible for me finding myself rummaging through the wifes knicker drawer and reading the agony columns in her magazines or am I just a pervert? :D

I used one to great effect during the 80's

A lot of us did things we are not proud of in the 80s.

OK, mostly it was clothing and haircuts, but some did cross over to the chipper side. It should be possible, with counselling and the passage of time, to deal with the shame.

I remember having a Bronty "Chipmaster" in my bag on a trip I made up to Scotland. It was great for playing long chip and run shots on some of the massive greens up there.
Played Blairgowrie Rosemount and a mate of mine used it off the tee on the par 3 15th. Popped it right next to the pin and sunk the birdie putt.
I offered it to him for £35.00 but he still wouldn't buy it off me.
I can't remember what I did with it now

Oh dear God. The Bronty Chipmaster is the poster boy for chipping clubs. The name alone sends a shiver right down my spine.

Ping used to sell a chipper, and next to the Bronty that one was almost forgivable.

My Dad still has the Bronty chipmaster, and the Mk2 version. Luckily they are both in his garage. He mainly plays Ping, I think there is some connection. Smiffy plays Ping too.

I use one, its called a 7 iron, just bump and run a 7 iron it does the same jobby!

Funny you should say that. I can't actually see any difference between playing a 7 iron like a putt and playing a chipper like....um....a chipper? Can a chipper hit it close on a medium short par 3?

(hold on, I can't do that with a 7 iron either :o)

Actually that's not true. I do hit greens from 7 iron distance....

if they're big...

I am man enough to admit i had a chipmaster. I now go to chipmasters anonymous, where they reckon i will free myself of the stigma within the next twenty years. :D

Very handy for my usual playing partner...

Who's three times my age, a lady and doesn't give a shling...

It only matters if it works for her.

I practice my chipping around the greens(my strength in my game) with a wedge as i refuse to go near on of those...
