Anyone play today?

hasnt stopped raining for 3 days here- forgotten what the sun or anything bright looks like.

Lovely Winter's day down here, sun shinning al be it bit chilly, 38 in 4BBB . Not looking good for 9 AM shotgun tomorrow, heavy rain forecast from 3 AM :(

We traditionally have a cross country course on New Year's Day, 6 holes mapped out across the 18. Played it twice yesterday.

Played at the Oxfordshire today, quite windy but sunny, managed 36 points and was very happy with that.

Started at 9 on time in relative dry but rain kicked in big time after 3 holes, comp abandoned after 10 played and soaking wet and cold ...

Tee'd off first in 4BBB Comp, crackin day, mild temp and very light wind, scored 46 points as a team, played really well,

had a very nice game this morning, weather was pretty good, a chilly start but once out in the sun it was quite nice.

best round ive had in a couple of weeks with a one under gross, manage to sink a few putts for a change.

In stark contrast to yesterday the weather was stunning today, not a cloud in sight and sunshine all day. Enough breeze to keep us honest but not enough to bend the flagsticks much. Usual better ball winter turn-up format, ended up tied for third, which was pretty good seeing as we couldn't buy a putt all day. Playing off mats certainly makes consistent ball striking easier once you get used to them - coming off them in March will be a shock to the system.

great fun comp today but after about 12 hours of solid rain and a few days of frozen ground and retained water the course should have been shut - but very enjoyable and my only game over Christmas hols

Absolutely lashed it down this morning but HID and his PP won the greensomes competition again. That makes it 3 out of 4 greensome wins for them. I was due to go out this afternoon but cancelled my tee time this morning. The sun came out though so I went to practice instead.

Rain duly stopped just as we teed off at 11.20 and it turned into a very pleasant day. The gales of the last few days also disappeared and it felt more like a spring day than mid winter. Scored 27 points in our 14 hole comp so was reasonably satisfied.

Playing tomorrow if the bad throat allows me to.
Did have a look today but felt like death warmed up so will try again tomorrow.

1st outing of the year for me today in the winter sweep, 75 for 38pts. Started with a double bogey at the 1st with a missed tap in from 10 inches :ooo: then did the same on the 13th for another double bogey

Was a smashing day for it with the course in great condition for the amount of rain that's fell around here lately.

Hi, Can I ask a question please?

You say the comp was abandoned. Was that by you deciding enough was enough or did the committee eventually abandon the comp?

I was down for running our first Stableford of the year and compared to last Winter's wet weather, the course was holding up quite well. Players turned up to be told that the comp may well be cancelled. I arrived at 8:20 to be told the comp had been cancelled due to rain. It was raining but not heavy and we've played in worse. So went upstairs for a coffee and the group of lads I sat with were quite keen to play. The Pro Shop staff then put on a 9 hole fun comp stableford and by 10 o'clock, as forecast, the rain had stopped. The course played well and I played to my 16 handicap coming in with 18 points. My playing partner, who plays off of 5 won the comp with 21 points.

So, what experience do others have with decision making on whether to cancel a comp or not? Are decisions made at the start of the comp or do the organisers wait an hour or two to see if the forecast of brightening weather materialises?

My only worry is that if members get used to comps being cancelled at the first sign of rain at the start then they will get used to not turning up at all. Thoughts please.

Happy New Year to you all as well.

I spent New Year's Eve at Woodbury Golf Club at their Dinner Dance and got to bed about 1:00. Up at 7:00 for a 9:00 tee time. Was the first to hit a ball on the course for 2015. Also the first to loose a ball off the first tee! Hit a tree and, well it just vanished.

Course played well although every hole was on forward mats. Good condition even though I don't like mats. I understand the need for them though. Began to get very windy towards the end and although there had been the odd moments of drizzle we didn't get wet.

Parred the 18th with a 50ft put which just missed the hole for a birdie. A very enjoyable round on a course where you are made to feel very welcome by staff and Members.

.

Committee stopped it. Waited till the Captain got round to the 9th then sounded the horn to bring us in. Greens were flooding by our sixth hole.

Thank you for your reply. It was the sort of solution I was thinking of. Let the competition start but warn competitors that if conditions deteriorated then a horn or klaxon would sound to cancel the comp.

I get the impression there are too many "fair weather" golfers on our Committee. The Captain apparently was contacted and he made the decision to cancel even though he wasn't even at the club to see the conditions.
