Moved to a house recently and it has a modern composite door with multipoint lock.
It's either locked or unlocked. When it's unlocked, you can open it from the outside with the handle.
In one way that's good - you can't lock yourself out.
But we're used to having a door that is always locked from the outside - the only way you can get in is with a key.
My understanding is that this is called "split spindle".

Question: can I just buy a replacement split spindle to install, or does split spindle also require a different type of lock?
(I've already checked that turning the key operates the latch without having to depress the handle).

Most new double glazing door handles are now like that, the older ones are like yours now.
Yes you can just replace the handle..

These people do spares for all aspects of double glazing, including door handles:)
Thanks. I don't want to replace the handles - they are fine.
I just want to arrange things so that when the door is not locked, you can't open it from the outside with the handle, only the key.
Are you saying I can just replace the existing solid spindle with a split spindle?

No, the door handles are different. The outer door handle is offset, the spindle is the same.

I think you're talking about the arrangement where there are two spindles at different heights, so the inner handle is not aligned with the outer one?

A split spindle is a single spindle. The inner and outer handles are the same height.

Maybe I'll give Miranda a call to ask for their advice.

Interested to hear what they say if you get some advice. Top of my head it’s not a simple job, it would need a completely new lock cassette which then depends on brand/spacing etc.
I program/adjust door lock preps on our machines most days in my job 🤣

Just looked up on line and found the advice below - so it seems it depends on the actual nature of the door & lock you currently have.

Changing From Single to Split Spindle Operation
Customers often want to change their uPVC door lock operation to a split spindle operation for added home security. Doing this solely depends on the current uPVC door lock you have. If you have a uPVC door lock that is capable of this operation then it may just be as simple as replacing the solid bar for a split bar inside your handles or replacing your door handles with lever pad instead of lever lever. With some uPVC door locks this will not be possible and you may need to purchase a new centre case or full door lock to achieve this.

Thanks. Looks like I'll need to get a local specialist to come and check what kind of lock it is.

Just paid £150 to have a new lock fitted on the patio door as the “ gearbox” had gone. 🥴
