Blew it again on Saturday.

Playing in the medal, a bad start with bogey then double on 1st and 2nd saw par golf with a 3 birdies cancelling out any more dropped shots.

Get to the 16th which was the scene of my last collapse. Hit a reasonable drive just right of the fairway, last few times has been a bad drive that’s cost me.

So there I am 190 to the flag and 165 to carry the bunkers just over the burn. Decided to go for it with the 2 iron plenty on club as only a slight east wind and enough to carry the bunkers at least.

At this point I’m only 3 over gross and the css would be at least 73 as there was a bit of wind about. So only needed to bogey it as 17 and 18 are both a chance at par and birdie. For at least 1 shot cut even with bogey one each.

A nasty thin, straight into what looked like the burn.

Got down there only to find it plugged into the face of the largest of the 3 pot bunkers, 8 shots( each time the ball dropped down and plugged again) later I’m out the bunker 2 puts for a 12, fuming.:(

Hooked drive on 17 hacked out to the middle of the fairway, great wedge to 5 feet only for the par put to lip out. Another bad drive on 18 saw an 8.

12 dropped shots in the last 3 holes and 11 of those were on 16 and 18…

I’ve now blown good scores on the 16 at least half a dozen times in the last year and I just cant work it out, every time I play a bounce game, no problem I’ve even had a couple of birdies there the last few rounds!!!!

Does anyone else have a hole on there home course that destroys a good card time after time?

On a more positive note played Royal Dornoch yesterday with seochris and shot a 76 gross with 4 birdies in the front 9. sss there is 73.

Another understanding one here.

I had a semi-meltdown towards the end of my medal round.

On the 14th I was 10 Over (+2 for the back 9) and ended up going bogey, bogey, d-bogey, bogey finish. Ended up playing to 15.

...... Which is better than my 18 handicap I suppose. Every cloud and all that

Dont forget that the 12 would probs have been only a double for h/c purposes and you could still have got that cut with a couple of pars to finish so it wasnt as bad as you thought.

In answer to your question though I have to say a resounding yes. My old course had my nemesis hole the 17th. I tremble just thinking about it. Throughout the season a couple of years ago and during each comp I played I cant remember ever parring it once when I had a decent card going. I played it fine when my card was shot by then but I threw in triple after double over and over again when in a great position. It really turned into a horrible mental block and I even resorted to hitting as little as a 7 iron off the tee just to try and take bogey. I was off 4 at the time so that shows the extent of my mental breakdown. I even arrived there under par gross and chucked in a quad in a comp once.

Without a doubt my h/c would have been 2 instead of 3 if it wasnt for that hole.

I feel your pain buddy. Put not one but two drives OOB on the 18th Saturday, head down I even managed to 3 putt from 6 feet to sign for a 10.

Couldn't get anything going for the weekend until the back 9, where I still missed a bag of putts coming home but at least it felt like I was playing golf, the 27 holes previously I wondered if some past version of me had taken control of my body and was learning how to play for the first time...

Pass the rope

Na, it's only a game. A bloody frustrating one, but still just a game.

:)

Sounds more like poor course management.

What was wrong with punching a wedge 70-90 yards up the fairway to lay up short of the hazards?

Take your chances with a pitch and putt to save par or at worse pitch and two putt for a bogie?

Therefore on the 17th and 18th tees you would have been in a much different mindset!

I know what you are saying but from the fairway 190 yards out i had no doubt i could make the shot. If I was in the semi i would have laid up to 90-100 yards.

More the bunkers though at the moment. they have taken to raking all the sand up the face, with the idea that the ball rolls back to the middle. Sand is just way too soft for that.

over the last few month if you go in a bunker with any sort of run on on the full the ball is plugged.

The only way i got the thing out in the end was cos it ran into the footmarks i'd made:(

Key to a round at Nairn at the moment is to avoid the bunkers at all cost.

I'm going up one night this week and playing the 16th untill i get it right;)

Hit a reasonable drive just right of the fairway,

I thought by that comment you were in the rough!

Clearly your just a talentless bottle merchant!!!

 :whoo: :ears:

I seem to be doing it the other way round at the moment; screw up early in the round and finish strongly for a semi-decent score and tales of "what might have been".

I did that too, topped it off the first tee but made bogey, missed the fairway on the 2nd hacked out sideways, 2 iron short for double. Then managed a to get going and was playing quite nice.

This year its either blow my handicap on the front 9 and leval for the back and make buffer or blow the hole score at one hole:(

Saturday I was six over par through 7 holes - 1 bogey, 1 double, 1 triple! Then just one over for the rest of the round. CSS went up so I still got a decent cut but should've been so much better!

The 18th at my place has ruined many a round. Big snap hook left into trouble, game over.

I thought I had it dialed on Saturday. Scabby low drive, leaving a solid 5i, wedge combo. I sliced the 5i into 5 foot deep rough, never to be seen again. We were looking for it, but when my partner nearly trod on an adder, we called it quits, and made a rapid exit.

A week gone Saturday, stood in the middle of the 18th fairway with 36 pts - finished with 36pts, and 38pts won the comp.

Last Saturday stood in the middle of the 18th fairway needing a par to beat my handicap. Ended up with a bogey for nett level - I'd already 3 putted 3 times. I finished with a nett 72, and 69 won.

Love the way I'm hitting it at present, just wish I could stop the stupid mistakes that are creeping in.

Does anyone else have a hole on there home course that destroys a good card time after time?

Sure. I've developed strategies to play them any way I want given the circumstances. For example, here's our last 4.

par4 4 3 4
5 4 4 6
5 5 3 8
4 5 3 6
6 5 4 5

I play them all to bogey them. Depending on how many over I am, I either play safe or go for bust on the last.

From now on, I'm all or nothing for these last 4.
