Was speaking to a mate of mine over the weekend that brought back an incident that I thought I would raise.

My brother arranges an annual match between 2 local pubs, his local and one a few of his mates drink in. It is coming up again and I was talking about it with one of the people who played in it last year. Anyway, last year it was played at my club and due to the numbers the club wanted to put it in as a society booking. This also ensured we could have the tee reserved. Anyway, my mate mentioned last night that he was glad it was not at our course this year as they made the members pay to play as well as they were their as part of a society and were booked in as such. Now I felt that this was pretty disgraceful but as this was only made clear on the day everyone had to pay or cancel the event.

Anyone else experienced similar. If you booked your society in at your course would you expect to pay as part of the society?

Have done this at a few clubs in the past, would expect to have to pay for any food etc but not to pay the green fee part, imo theyre taking the proverbial

I think you would have to pay the full society rates at mine.

I also think you would not get the bar card discount, as you are part of a society.

Agreed. I hosted one the other week, and only paid for the food.

Shocking if they're including you as a society member.

I would not pay, but I dont think our place would make me. I do kinda understand it but still..

When we play as a society from work, the members generally pay the same amount as everyone else. I've not known any club insist on it, the money from the members "green fee" goes towards the kitty for the prizes.

Refusing to give a member their usual discount is ridiculous, most clubs are glad of members bringing in societies in the present economic climate. There's no question of my club not giving me the usual bar card discount, I'm a fee paying member, society meet or not.

Yes i have been in a society for 20yrs + and we have had had several events at my club. In the sociey we pay the same fee wherever we go and yes we are expected to pay even at our own course.

I wouldnt pay and would play anyway I do not see how they can justify chargeing you, you are a member. How much sway do you hold with the society I would threaten to take it elsewhere.

My course wouldn't and another local course allow me the associate discount if I play there with a society. Only have to pay the comp fees.

I've played in society meets at my own place and only ever been asked to pay for food, although generally I will just tell the organiser to reduce everyone else's fee by a couple of quid and I'll put my money in too.

During our annual Festival Week we have an Open/invitation on the Saturday, where the club charges EVERYONE a full green fee. Suffice to say I have never played in it, nor have most of my mates.

I got charged for the food when I did the GM Golf days at Ascot which is right and proper but wouldn't expect to pay especially if I'd forked out on 7 day membership already.

We've the Volvo coming up and the rules say the opposition should get courtesy of the course and if not the cost of the green fees has to be split between the four so I guess unless I can get the club to agree to something sharpish technically I'll be paying to play in that.

not tried it yet but I would think we would have to pay. there is also the consideration that it is the combination of green fee and food elements that brings the costs down as numbers go up, take out half the green fees and half the 'society' is paying full rate green fees and you're all paying full rate for the food.

No.

I was invited to a "charity" day at my own course. i.i.r.c. it was £40 to include food. Taking the pie and chips as a tenner, that's £30 for the golf. Now, if someone wants £30 for their charity from me, they've got it if they ask nice. :)
If my course wants to keep £20 for themselves and give £10 per player to the organiser for the charity, in my book that means I owe £10. Sadly, I failed to make my point. I didn't play. :(

If you are playing at "home" Martin, and the normal green fee for members guests is £20.00, you and your partner just pay £10.00 each towards the cost of your guest green fees. It won't cost you anything to play yourself :D :D :D
