Hi all,

this is my first post, so apologies if it's in the wrong place.
I'm thinking of investing in a rescue or driving iron. I seem to be able to use my woods reasonably well, but my long irons are always a disappointment (big slice). I looked at the weekend only to be blinded by a forest of 23, 20 degree items! has anybody got a simple comparison I could use. Which degree matches a normal 3 iron for example. Any feedback gratefully received.

Welcome to the forum,

You'll get differing opinions on the degree of rescue to fill with your set. I have a 20 degree rescue which tends to go the distance of my 4 iron, so that's the club I leave out. Rescues have longer shafts but, depending on your swing, might go about the same as a similar loft iron or a bit more or less. You'd need to try one out to find out....

My rescue hits the ball high (or my technique), but I know some players (mostly better than me) that get quite a low flight and a surprising amount of distance.

I was so disappointed by the lack of distance I actually bought a 3 iron as well, so my set goes 3i, 3rescue, 5-SW.
However, when it's on song, I use it for lay-ups and general distance-covering shots for about 170-180....but better not to judge anything by this.....

Just to be controvertial (for a change!). Golf World this month has an interesting article on rescues / hybrids and some interesting comparisons with long irons. It'll be worth reading given your question.

I will say I do like the techy bit that GW does. The wedge / spin one was particularly good.

Sorry guys!

In general terms a 3H will be about 18 or 19 degrees and similar to the 3 iron and then the same down the line. A 4 H will be around 22 or 23 and so on. I find mine useful out of rough, on the tee on long par 3's and for position on some par 4's and for 2nd shots on par 5's. Much easier to hit than my 3 iron and with a nice high flight too.

I guess the answer is to go in and try as many as you like and find one to suit. As a rough guide and in MY opinion the ones to look at are MD, Tayloremade burner, Cobra DWS baffler, Nike and the Mizuno HiFlite but check out this months golf monthly and their equipment guide (and then go to Golf World after if not completely satisfied!)

I dumped my 3 iron and 4 iron for rescues I have a 18 and a 21 and would not be without them. I cant get on with long irons so these realy help. On tight fairways I use the 18 off the tee with good results.

I never carry a 3 iron, can't hit one for toffee.
I've got a Mizuno 20 degree Fli-Hi to make up for it, and to be honest it's the one club in my bag I am hitting at the moment that I feel totally confident with.
From the tees on long par 3's, or tighter par 4's, off the deck or out of the semi. It's superb. I can draw or fade it to order, and it even has it's uses around the green for those longer chip shots where you have got a lot of green to cover. After debating whether I actually needed one or not, I wouldn't be without it now.
