Anybody had a similar injury and any timescales before returning to play?

Evening chaps

I find myself writing this post whilst shaking my head in frustration! I have for the last couple of months made real progress in my game which has developed a really good positive attitude, however disaster struck a week last Friday whilst playing in an open comp.

I stood up the the 13th tee and fired a stunning drive leaving my a 70 yard downhill chip to the green, whilst walking to the ball I began to get an uncomfortable feeling in my right rib cage which was taking my breath away to say the least. I had to ask people I was playing with for pain killers just so I could finish the round it was that bad!!

After leaving the course I returned home and the pain relaxed and it just felt a little tender, I thought very little about it until I went to the range a couple of days later only to find after 10 balls I was in agony yet again!! Since then (1 week ago) I have struggled with the pain and managed to get by on pain killers etc.

I believe I might have pulled or strained my intercostal muscles and I have to say I am struggling to get out of bed, tie shoe laces and I am finding it difficult to do other menial tasks.

My question is this, how long should I rest it before returning to the range and are there any excercises I can do to protect myself from doing this again? As I understand it it may be due to me overswinging and trying too hard.

I have to say I am totally gutted as I just bought a new setof clubs and my balls striking has come on leaps and bounds - a little concerned this will put me back massively?

Any advice to help me recover quickly would be totally appreciated as I can't stand this sitting around!!!

Thanks in advance

Matt

I did a similar injury to my chest when I fell off my mountain bike on a downhill section. I basically came off and as trying to protect by chest on landing I put my arm across it and clenched my fist, and when I landed the chest around where my fist was felt very tender.

Anyway a couple of days later I went for a run and I just couldn't take a full breath and was reduced to walking home gasping for breath off just walking! trying to swing a club was ridiculous I couldn't get my arms much past just below parallel, I reckon you've got 2-3 months out just be thankful it's the winter.

I should say I didn't go to the doctors so maybe they could help.

Had a intercostal tear due to an elbow playing football so I feel your pain!

It was some years ago and I seem to recall that it can only really be sorted by rest

I had a similar injury a few years ago falling when ice skating (or trying!). It messed me up for about 6 weeks. Hope you fix yourself soon fella (You'll probably be up to putting and chipping practice in a few weeks so at least there's something to work on)

I reckon you've given yourself a hernia hitting it that far :) How'd you get on?
Lay up and take it easy until it's fixed proper or it'll keep just going on you.

Bash has the right idea re putting and chipping - it's like he's seen you........;)

Surely the correct answer is get medical advice. How do you know what you've done without getting it professionally checked, x-ray'd and diagnosed. Only then will you get a realistic prognosis on how long it will take

Unfortunately Andy a hurtful post but as usual I think you may be right!!!

It should do me the world of good - will hit some practice on the short game and try and improve there.

Had a mixed round really, the new irons performed beautifully and worked a treat - the driver however not so much!

As usual your home ground was in lovely condition and it was a pleasure to play. I might make a return on the 25th of this month if I am fit in time.

How are the new bats working out for you?
