what would you want from a new driver? Is 15 yards enough?

tried a TaylorMade r7 Limited 10.5* stiff Matrix Ozik shaft.

I was hitting this pretty well, generally straight. slightly lower flight than I'm used to.
going for £147.

what do you reckon, go for this (though I'll try this again and the 11.5) or a full Snake Eyes custom fit.

(I got them to watch me hit mine (using the radar) then bring out the clubs that they thought I needed not what I thought I wanted)

Having talked to you a couple of times about this I would say go for the custom fit. If you go for the off the shelf model you will always be thinking 'what if' when you hit it badly and I suspect you would be looking at having a custom fit further down the line (plus I would be interested to hear what the Snake Eyes fitting experience is like assuming you will go to head office in Cambridge)

Viscount, my advice (with the best possible intentions) would be to forget about new drivers, get your handicap down to low teens before you worry about a new trouble finder. Playing of 21, Id say you have weaknesses in other areas of your game, as I found out a good while ago, its not the clubs fault!

brendy, you know what it's like, there comes a time when . . .

I know I have other problems (a lot of them) and I am taking steps to do something about them. But, I always have the feeling that I can only hit the current driver about 60% without risking a slice.
I went on the radar today, swing speed normal 94 (peak 99), it was 88 when I bought the current driver.

so maybe lessons first, then a new toy

If it helps I have a Cleveland Launcher in 10.5 degree stiff that you are welcome to try when we meet up on 6th November. At least you can see if it helps you on the course.

Definately lessons first Viscount , but a new shiney driver always looks good in the bag until you take the rapper of it.
You said you had a slice my mate had a horrendous slice 5 lessons later with our pro and a bit of practise he now hits a nice wee draw and gained a good few yards so it can be done.

If you are happy with the look/feel of it then it sounds like a bargain, 15yds for £147, do they do a 30yd version :D

15yds should put you almost 2 clubs closer to most greens, I'd buy it for that kind of price. As you say I might try the 11.5 first (high launch low spin) if it's available, if not get the 10.5 and rip it :)

Well, I've had more drivers over the past 10 years than I care to think about.

Do I drive it further.... no :D
Do I hit more fairways....no :D

It's me thats the problem not the driver !

Currently playing a 12* driver with a reg shaft and it's the best for a while.

Will I waste more money on the holy grail of drivers....of course I will :D

I have the R7 limited in 10.5 with the regular Ozik shaft and it has been the best driver I've had (and there have been many). I find it longer and more importantly easier to control. Its still the weakest part of my game but the club has certainly helped. I'd say perhaps try a regular so you have a comparison with the stiffer version and then go for it. Its a great club and a decent price.

Me too. I have three drivers, all work pretty well and the latest especially well. Trouble is every time I DO manage a 250 yard drive in the middle of the fairway, I'll miss the green with a 7 iron.....

It's sad really, but that's the reality.

I have the odd game where everything clicks and it still surprises me I can go round in 75 shots, I can't actually play golf very well (given the amount of practice and clubs I've bought)...but I do LOVE it, and spending £150 on a new stick that costs me £5 a round for 30 games doesn't spoil my enjoyment.

The Matrix is a very good shaft - I have a couple in play and have used others previously. The made for Titleist/TM versions are slightly softer than the original ones but are still very playable. .

I see you use Rifle 4.5 shafts in your irons. If you hit those well, and don't lose control, then a stiff Matrix might be a bit too stiff. 4.5 Rifle is a slightly soft Regular flex.

Ethan, the 4.5's came with the clubs which I got at a very good price at a time when I had even less understanding of the value of matching shaft and swing.

swung with a modicum of control and they work quite well, get ambitious . . . the bad shot with the irons is a pull/hook.
they do confuse me though, I recently went through a spate of getting ridiculous distances with the 6 and 7 iron (but not the 5), up to 197 yards once (measured with the gps); pitiful putting ruined any resulting glory.
