Just to add a further slant to the thread.
When they say, as the OP does, standard +3 layers, I'm assuming that is for correct butt and grip diameter, I.E both grip and butt are 0.600/0.580.
I've gone for the Lamkins (as above) but they only do them on Gamola in 0.580, where my TT DG shafts have a 0.600 diameter. Following some research I found if you put a bigger shaft in a smaller grip, the shaft isn't going to give so it pushes the material out and thus makes it thicker, rather than thinner as you'd expect.
The only real way to "stretch" a grip, apparently, is to pull it farther down on the shaft. A .580 grip that you don't stretch goes to the same point on a shaft as a .600 shaft... more material, thicker grip
Following a little more research it turns out if doing this the 0.20 difference in grip/butt diameter is equivalent to just over 1 layer of tape, with 1 layer being 0.15.
Basically, as per the example in the OP, if putting a 0.580 grip over a 0.600 butt it would be + 2 layers not 3.
I feel like I've actually learned something tonight
